Star Wars is currently in a state of change that could breathe new life into the franchise. Many exciting Star Wars projects are coming soon, such as The Mandalorian & Grogu and Star Wars: Starfighter, but there are many more possible Star Wars adventures currently in limbo.
In her exit interview with Deadline, Kathleen Kennedy discussed the projects currently on hold as she turns over the reigns to Dave Filoni and Lynwen Brennan. From a Lando Calrissian project to ambitious projects from well-known Hollywood names, these projects could expand the Star Wars universe even further. However, the question remains whether these plans will actually get made into movies or television shows.

8 Simon Kinberg's Potential Star Wars Trilogy Seems Most Likely to Happen
Back in 2024, Simon Kinberg was confirmed to be working on a new Star Wars trilogy. While some rumors hinted that it would be an extension of the Skywalker Saga, it likely will be a separate trilogy. In August 2025, Kinberg talked with Nerdtropolis about his excitement for the film and his longtime Star Wars fandom.
Kinberg already has experience in the franchise through his work on Star Wars Rebels. In her exit interview, Kathleen Kennedy explained that the script is still being worked on after extensive changes. Still, with Kinberg's Star Wars experience, his project will likely make it to the screen.
7 James Mangold & Beau Willimon's Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi Could Explore a New Era
James Mangold and Beau Willimon have also been working on a project for the Star Wars franchise, Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi. Unlike many of the other projects in the works, which focus on the Skywalker Saga era and beyond, their project would instead focus on the distant past of the Star Wars universe. However, James Mangold's potential commitments to the DCU could put the film on the backburner for even longer.
However, Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi, while on hold, still seems likely to be made. Kennedy confirmed that a script had been written for the project in her exit interview. She stated, "Jim Mangold and Beau Willimon wrote an incredible script, but it is definitely breaking the mold and it’s on hold." Like many of the projects currently on hold, the shift in management at Lucasfilm could make or break the film's chances of premiering on the silver screen.
James Mangold's Star Wars Won't Feature Two Important Words
A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, James Mangold will set his Star Wars film. But it may be longer ago than some may realize.
6 Taika Waititi's Star Wars Script Is Written, But on Hold
While Taika Waititi has been slated to work on a Star Wars project since 2020, the film is still in development. In an interview with Variety, Waititi confirmed that his film would focus on new characters and seek to bring back the fun of the original trilogy. With comedy classics like What We Do in the Shadows and Thor: Ragnarok under his belt, Waititi seems like an excellent choice for a more humorous Star Wars film.
In her exit interview, Kennedy confirmed that the script was ready for Waititi's film, which she enjoyed. However, with her leaving the role of Lucasfilm's leader, the film's fate rests with Dave Filoni and Lynwen Brennan.
5 Donald Glover's Lando TV Series or Movie Is Still in Early Stages
Originally pitched as a streaming series, Lando was meant to follow the exploits of Lando Calrissian throughout his life. Donald Glover has been attached to the series from the beginning after his turn as Lando in Solo: A Star Wars Story was widely praised. However, the project has undergone multiple changes, including a switch to a Lando movie instead, as reported in 2023.
In her exit interview, Kennedy mentioned that Donald Glover had turned in a script for the project, which means that it is still currently being worked on. However, with the changeover in leadership at Lucasfilm, its fate is still uncertain. As Dave Filoni and Lynwen Brennan take the reins of the company, they may choose to reimagine the project once more or even delay it further as they wait and see the reception to The Mandalorian & Grogu and Star Wars: Starfighter.
Star Wars Outlaws Makes a Strong Case for a Lando Calrissian Game
Not much is known about the future of the Star Wars Outlaws concept, but whatever form it comes in, hopefully ir will include Lando Calrissian.
4 The Fate of Patty Jenkins' Rogue Squadron Project Is Currently Unknown
Patty Jenkins was officially confirmed to be working on a film about Rogue Squadron pilots in 2020. The project was confirmed not to be based on the Star Wars: Rogue Squadron games. Instead, it was planned to be an original story. However, Jenkins commitment to Wonder Woman 3 delayed production. After Wonder Woman 3 fell through, Jenkins revealed that she would be working on Star Wars: Rogue Squadron again.
However, fans have not received many updates on the fate of this project. In an interview with IGN in 2023, Kathleen Kennedy mentioned that the project was still being discussed but might be reconceptualized as a streaming series for Disney+ instead. Still, the complete lack of discussion of the project in Kennedy's exit interview implies that the project may have been canceled.
Patty Jenkins Should Still Get To Direct A Star Wars Movie
Patty Jenkins' sincere approach to the Wonder Woman films, vanquishing the word "cheesy" from her vocabulary, is perfect for the Star Wars franchise.
3 Rey's New Jedi Order Films Are Also in Limbo
At Star Wars Celebration 2023, a New Jedi Order movie was announced, starring Daisy Ridley as Rey with Sharmeen Obaid‑Chinoy slated to direct the film. While Lucasfilm promoted a lot of hype about the film and its possibilities following the reveal, the New Jedi Order film has been plagued with numerous delays. Kathleen Kennedy didn't even mention the film or its status during her exit interview.
However, there could still be hope for the New Jedi Order. With Obaid-Chinoy's excellent track record in film, television, and journalism, her take on the Star Wars universe would be welcome and refreshing. The fate of Rey's Star Wars future could lie with fans' reception of Star Wars: Starfighter, premiering next year as the first film taking place after the Skywalker Saga.
2 Rian Johnson's Star Wars Trilogy Is Unlikely to Happen
After Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi, Rian Johnson was set to make an entire Star Wars trilogy of his own. This decision was made before his film received over the top hate from a loud minority in the Star Wars fandom. This reaction plus multiple other factors, including the huge success of Johnson's Knives Out mystery franchise, make another foray into the Star Wars franchise unlikely to happen any time soon.
Unlike Jenkins' Rogue Squadron project and the possible Rey film, Rian Johnson was mentioned in Kathleen Kennedy's exit interview because she was directly asked about the trilogy's future. Kennedy cited the Knives Out movies as a reason for the trilogy being backburnered. However, she also stated, "I do believe he got spooked by the online negativity." Therefore, Johnson's trilogy is the least likely backburnered project to actually reach the screen at this moment.
New Knives Out Game is Coming to Netflix
Streaming giant Netflix is turning one of its biggest original murder mystery films, Knives Out, into a brand-new video game.
1 Adam Driver and Steven Sodenbergh's Hunt for Ben Solo Has Already Been Rejected
In an interview with Variety, Adam Driver revealed that he had worked with Steven Sodenbergh and Scott Z. Burns on a pitch for The Hunt for Ben Solo, a film continuing Kylo Ren's story after his apparent death in Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker. However, in that same interview, Driver also admitted that Disney had rejected the film "because they didn't see how Ben Solo was still alive."
Still, Lucasfilm was more open to the idea. In her exit interview, Kennedy stated, "Steve Soderbergh and Adam Driver turned in a script written by Scott Burns. It was just great. Anything’s a possibility if somebody’s willing to take a risk." Thus, even though the script was rejected in the past, with new leadership at Lucasfilm and Disney, Ben Solo's story may have a chance to continue after all.
