Screenwriter and television creator Damon Lindelof is reportedly working on a new Star Wars film with Ms. Marvel director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. Lindelof is reportedly co-writing the script with an unknown writing partner and Obaid-Chinoy is set to direct the film.

Since The Rise of Skywalker, Disney and Lucasfilm have been trying to develop a new Star Wars movie, but several projects have been either delayed or removed from the production slate indefinitely. This includes Wonder Woman 1984 director Patty Jenkins's highly anticipated Rogue Squadron film, which was pulled from the schedule in September.

As reported by Deadline, Lindelof is currently working on the script for a new Star Wars film, and production is likely a long way off. It was reportedly important to Lucasfilm and Lindelof that a director be brought on so that their vision for the film is included in the script. Plot details are being kept under wraps and this project appears to be one of the more secretive films being produced by the studio. That being said, the fact that Disney and Lucasfilm were quick to secure a director long before the film goes into production shows that they are pursuing this project intently. The last film in the franchise to be released in theaters was 2019’s Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker, which concluded the sequel trilogy.

Lindelof is primarily known for his work in television and is best known for co-creating and executive producing the hit ABC drama series Lost. He is also credited with creating HBO's award-winning limited series Watchmen, which served as a sequel to Alan Moore's legendary graphic novel, and the HBO series The Leftovers. Lindelof has also written numerous Hollywood films including Ridley Scott's Alien Prequel Prometheus and J.J, Abrams' Star Trek films, as well as the 2020 horror satire The Hunt, which he co-wrote with fellow Lost creator Carlton Cruise.

Obaid-Chinoy is a two-time academy award-winning filmmaker. She won the Oscar for Best Documentary Short Subject in 2012 for her film Saving Face and again in 2016 for her film A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness. More recently Obaid-Chinoy, directed two episodes of the Disney Plus series Ms. Marvel. Obaid-Chinoy is a very interesting choice for a Star Wars film, as she is primarily known as a documentary filmmaker. She was brought on specifically for her documentary background so that Ms. Marvel could accurately depict Pakistan's history and culture. It's unknown at the moment whether she will bring her signature style to Lindelof's Star Wars film, but with the recent release of Andor, it seems plausible.

Andor has a very realistic tone and style, with the show often depicting what life could be like for the average person in the Star War s galaxy under the Empire. It seems reasonable that Obaid-Chinoy could use her documentary skills to similar results.

The Star Wars saga is now available on Disney Plus.
