Ever since Disney handed the Star Wars video game license to EA, fans have been waiting for Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 3. Unfortunately, such a game has never materialized, and it seems EA has no interest in revisiting the critically-acclaimed RPG series. However, a new report indicates that while Knights of the Old Republic 3 may not be on the way, fans may have a Knights of the Old Republic remake or reboot to look forward to instead.

According to Cinelinx, citing two unnamed sources, a new Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic game is in active development. One source has said that it's a straight Knights of the Old Republic remake, whereas the other has said that it's something a little different. According to the second source, the game will feature elements from both the original Knights of the Old Republic and Knights of the Old Republic 2 - The Sith Lords to bring "certain things" into the current Star Wars canon. This would make the game a reboot instead of a remake.

Before fans get too excited about the possibility of a Knights of the Old Republic remake, they should consider the source of the information. No concrete evidence has been provided to back up the claims, so fans should certainly keep their expectations in check. However, Cinelinx has been correct about Star Wars leaks in the past, so it's still possible that a Knights of the Old Republic remake is genuinely in the works.

Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords

Regardless of what form the supposed Knights of the Old Republic remake takes, it would be nice for fans to be able to experience the story with updated visuals, especially since parts of it have already been confirmed to be canon. While it's possible to play Knights of the Old Republic on Xbox One and mobile devices, other modern platforms are missing out, and there are certain things about the game that haven't exactly aged well.

And while some fans may be more interested in a Knights of the Old Republic 3 game instead of a KOTOR 1 remake, one has to imagine that its potential success would open the door for a proper sequel. Fans will just have to wait for a confirmation of the game's existence and go from there.

In the meantime, fans may be able to get more KOTOR content in other media. Last week, reports surfaced that a KOTOR movie and TV show were in active development at Disney, though nothing official has been announced to date.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is iOS, Android, PC, and Xbox.
