It’s an exciting time to be a Star Wars fan. Andor debuts in a month, the third season of The Mandalorian should follow shortly, and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is scheduled to release at some point in 2023. Ahead of the launch of this much-anticipated sequel to Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, the official Star Wars website announced two new books. The first is Star Wars Jedi: Battle Scars, a novel following the Mantis crew on an adventure taking place before the events of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. The second book is The Art of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, which chronicles the concept art and creation of the new game.

In Star Wars Jedi: Survivor’s first trailer, there appears to be a time jump between Fallen Order and Survivor, and Respawn will use its novel to fill the gap. When the game’s titular Jedi Cal Kestis is last seen, he has decided not to pursue the force-sensitive children from the Holocron he obtained in Fallen Order, leaving the status of the Mantis crew up in the air. While there aren’t many details available yet, Battle Scars promises to return fans to this popular story and time period.

Star Wars Jedi: Battle Scars will take place between 2019’s Fallen Order and the upcoming Survivor, and will release on March 7, 2023. Taking place a few years after the conclusion of Fallen Order, Battle Scars should be set around the same time as another recent Star Wars project: Obi-Wan Kenobi. Whether that impacts any characters or storylines in the novel remains to be seen.

The official Star Wars site also revealed its story will follow Jedi: Fallen Order’s Mantis crew, whose fate was left in question during Survivor’s first trailer. The trailer features the Mantis in a shipwrecked state, with no signs of life outside of Cal Kestis and his droid companion, BD-1. Star Wars Jedi: Battle Scars may show fans where Greez, Cere, and Nightsister Merrin are when fans return to Cal’s story next year.

Star Wars Jedi: Battle Scars’ Author and Release Date

The new Star Wars novel will be written by Sam Maggs, who has writing credits on some of the biggest AAA games in recent years including Marvel’s Spider-Man, Call of Duty: Vanguard, and Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart. Notably, Maggs went viral last year in a video discussing the discrimination she experienced while working on an unnamed franchise. Outside the video game universe, Maggs is also famous for writing The Fangirl’s Guide to the Galaxy, a handbook for women navigating all things around nerd culture. She also has written comics for Star Trek, Wonder Woman, Captain Marvel, and Rick and Morty, among other titles.

The novel’s release date also gives fans an idea of when they can expect Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. Given that the novel takes place between the two Star Wars Jedi titles, and will most likely be giving important context on where Cal is at the start of Survivor, the sequel game may not be released until a few months after the debut of Battle Scars. An early to mid-summer release is possible, but the novel’s schedule could push Star Wars Jedi: Survivor’s release date back until holiday 2023.

More details on Battle Scars may be released at Gamescom, which takes place this week; or at D23, Disney’s annual investor call in September. For now, fans can rest assured that they will be getting more background on the Mantis crew when Star Wars Jedi: Battle Scars comes out on March 7, 2023.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is releases in 2023 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
