The upcoming Star Wars Hunters is being delayed once again. Lucasfilm Games and mobile developer Zynga announced this free-to-play Star Wars battle royale shooter during a Nintendo Direct livestream back in 2021. Set to launch on both the Nintendo Switch and mobile devices, Star Wars Hunters takes place between the events of the original Star Wars trilogy and Star Wars Episode 7: The Force Awakens and will allow players to challenge one another as an assortment of mercenaries, Rebel heroes, and Imperial Stormtroopers.
Later that year, Star Wars Hunters was soft-launched on Android-compatible mobile devices in India, the Philippines, Malaysia, and Indonesia. However, last summer Zynga announced that the full version of Star Wars Hunters would be delayed until 2023, citing a desire to create a “competitive battle arena game that will entertain for years to come” and meet high expectations among Star Wars gaming fans eager to dive into Hunters’ interesting mix of playable characters.
Unfortunately for these fans, it appears that Star Wars Hunters is being pushed back once more. Zynga announced this latest delay in a post on its official Twitter account, which reveals that Hunters will now launch sometime in 2024. The reasons given are similar to the ones from the previous Star Wars Hunters delay, with Zynga stating that its team is committed to giving players the best possible gameplay experience and that it will need more time to do so.
Zynga also acknowledged that these delays can be frustrating for players who are excited to see what Star Wars Hunters brings to the crowded online multiplayer battle royal landscape, and thanked them for their patience during the game’s prolonged development cycle. It also noted the positive feedback fans have been providing in Star Wars Hunters’ soft-launch territories, and even teased new gameplay updates and features like Ranked Mode. If all goes according to plan, Zynga will add these and more sometime before Star Wars Hunters’ full launch next year.
Star Wars gaming fans have had plenty of exciting news over the past few years, with next year in particular seeing the release of Massive Entertainment’s open-world crime caper Star Wars Outlaws and Nightdive Studio's nostalgia-inducing remaster of the classic FPS Star Wars: Dark Forces. Now Star Wars Hunters is joining that list following its latest delay, which will see it pushed back from its previously-reported launch sometime this year until 2024. Zynga hasn’t provided an exact date for the game’s launch as of this writing, so players outside of Hunters’ soft launch territories will have to stay tuned for further developments.
