Not long ago, Star Wars Battlefront seemed lost to a galaxy far, far away. There’s always been a dedicated corner of the Star Wars community that adores the Battlefront franchise, sure, but third installments have had bad omens associated with them. For instance, Free Radical’s nearly finished Star Wars Battlefront 3 was canceled and Pandemic’s attempt at a third installment buckled as it was only given a year of development time.
With seemingly no plans for a third Star Wars Battlefront following DICE and EA’s 2015 reboot and DICE, Criterion, Motive, and EA’s 2017 reboot sequel, a hypothetical third reboot entry has been struck with bittersweet optimism via Star Wars Battlefront 2’s highest ever concurrent player counts on Steam, which Star Wars Battlefront 2’s own Iden Versio, Janina Gavankar, shared in a social media post.
All stars seem to be aligning in terms of player and developer demand. But, if by some miracle there is a future where a Star Wars Battlefront 3 comes to fruition, it must consider including every shred of Star Wars iconography imaginable in order to ensure its longevity and franchise comprehensiveness.
Star Wars Battlefront 2 Breaks Record 8 Years After Release
As players continue to rally for a third game, Star Wars Battlefront 2 breaks an impressive record eight years after its initial release.
Star Wars Battlefront 3 Has Been Given a New Hope
No matter how enticing and hopeful the idea of a possible Star Wars Battlefront 3 may be, especially with Star Wars Battlefront 2 developers having recently shared an interest in returning to the franchise, it’s important to recognize that it’s still facing terribly low odds. If a Star Wars Battlefront 3 wasn’t already in development, this might not be a pivotal enough display to make a difference. It’s undeniably neat, though, how many voices are speaking out to demonstrate a desire for the franchise to continue.
Plus, even if one was to enter development due to this abrupt surge in excitement and potential, it doesn’t necessarily mean that it wouldn’t meet the same fate as its predecessor, though at least studios should know what glaring cardinal sins to avoid by circumventing Star Wars Battlefront 2’s mistakes.
Against All Odds, a Star Wars Battlefront 3 Must Endure
Regardless, one way a Star Wars Battlefront 3 could hopefully sustain itself and not go extinct is by featuring all possible content in the Star Wars lore, whether it’s canonical, a part of Legends, or otherwise. Andor is one of Star Wars’ most successful and popular projects in quite some time and is indeed what stirred a renewed interest and popularity in Star Wars Battlefront 2, with Andor actor Muhannad Ben Amor chiming in on Star Wars Battlefront 3 discourse favorably.
Therefore, if only to commemorate the Disney+ show as a monumental piece of tinder in its catalytic spark, Andor content in Star Wars Battlefront 3 would be essential, whether that’s via playable characters like Cassian Andor, Bix Caleen, and Syril Karn, or maps like Ferrix, Narkina 5, and Ghorman. Spanning every Star Wars era and medium, a Battlefront 3 could sate nearly every die-hard fan while also having endless DLCs, expansions, and updates.
This could include expansions that players would be familiar with from previous games, such as Star Wars Battlefront’s epic Rogue One: Scarif DLC with Jyn Erso and Orson Krennic, as well as expansions that feature characters and content that has yet to grace the series, such as a possible Star Wars: The Force Unleashed or Star Wars Zero Company update. It might not be what led to them ending development, but DICE’s Star Wars Battlefront games restricting themselves to the theatrical Skywalker Saga between episodes 1–9 always meant that they’d hit a ceiling they couldn’t shatter eventually.
It would be exhilarating seeing a new Battlefront game explore the modern sensibilities of the live-service multiplayer shooter genre and doing so with limitless content at its disposal throughout every nook and cranny of Star Wars could allow it to have a tremendous shelf life. A Star Wars Battlefront 3 would be a dream come true and, considering how low its chances are now, it’d have to pull no punches and truly take advantage of the opportunity it’d have because there might never be another like it.
