While early reactions to Battlefront 2 were lukewarm due to controversies surrounding its lootboxes, later updates would add new content and draw players back in.

DICE and EA would eventually discontinue support for Star Wars Battlefront 2 in 2020, with many of the gamers who decried its initial 2017 launch now praising it as one of the better Star Wars games of the modern era. As pointed out by Reddit user Local_Ad_8171 on r/StarWarsBattlefront, Star Wars Battlefront 2 recently hit a concurrent player count of 5,583 users on Steam on May 4, marking a 254.5% increase from its previous number. This is also the second-highest player count for Star Wars Battlefront 2, with its all-time peak being 10,489.

This year’s Star Wars Day celebration was the most likely factor for the renewed interest in Star Wars Battlefront 2, and it comes at a very active time for the franchise. Earlier this year, Revenge of the Sith celebrated its 20th anniversary by returning to theaters, and the acclaimed Disney Plus series Andor is in the middle of its second season as of this writing. A new animated Star Wars series was also released on Disney Plus on May 4, which also saw special in-game events and content in Fortnite and Disney Dreamlight Valley just to name a few.

The rest of 2025 looks to be an exciting time for Star Wars fans, with Star Wars Outlaws releasing a second DLC story expansion on May 15 and a new season of Star Wars: Visions set to launch on Disney Plus in October. In the meantime, fans are diving back into the underappreciated Star Wars Battlefront 2 for another round of combat, even as gamers still hope for a new entry in the series someday.
