Star Wars Battlefront 2 has officially broken its concurrent player count record on Steam, surpassing 12,000 in-game players simultaneously. While the record might not seem massively impressive, Star Wars Battlefront 2 is an eight-year-old shooter that recently found a new lease of life as players jumped back into the title to rally for a third game. There have also been rumors circulating that the title has surpassed more than 160,000 concurrent players across all platforms, but an official source has not verified this number.

The sudden desire for EA to green-light a third Star Wars Battlefront game began earlier this month, around the same time that Andor Season 2 ended. The second season received massive praise from Star Wars fans, with one of the show's actors even backing the petition for EA to create Star Wars Battlefront 3. Actor Muhannad Ben Amor, who portrays Wilmon Paak in Andor, recently took to social media to showcase his impressive 469 hours in Star Wars Battlefront 2, before calling upon EA to give fans a third game "ASAP."

Star Wars Battlefront 2 Breaks Its Steam Concurrent Player Record

Star Wars Battlefront 2's player count has reportedly been resurging for a few days now, but the shooter officially reached an all-time high on Steam today, peaking at 12,384 concurrent players. According to SteamDB, the shooter's previous concurrent player count record on the platform was 10,489, which it achieved in January 2021. Unfortunately, platforms such as Xbox and PlayStation do not make their player counts public, which means it's impossible to know an official number across consoles. However, if fans continue to petition for a third entry, Star Wars Battlefront 2 could continue to surge in players on Steam over the weekend.

It's fair to say that Star Wars Battlefront 2 fans are looking to send a message to EA, but whether or not the studio will give in to players' demands is currently unknown. While the eight-year-old title is already breaking records, YouTuber Bombastic, who has over 690,000 subscribers on the platform, has called for players to jump into Star Wars Battlefront 2 on Saturday, May 24. The video has almost 150,000 views at the time of writing, which means there's a good chance the game may continue to surge later today. The hope is that if enough people continue to play the 2017 shooter, EA may see the desire for a third entry and green-light Star Wars Battlefront 3.

Even ex-Star Wars Battlefront 2 devs are on board for a third game, as developer Mats Helge Holm, who worked on the 2015 reboot, its 2017 sequel, and the 2019 Celebration Edition, has said he and his ex-colleagues want to "get the gang back together" to work on another entry. While Star Wars Battlefront 2 was embroiled in microtransaction controversy at launch, there would be a ton of pressure on EA and DICE to get Star Wars Battlefront 3 right. Unfortunately, EA has previously rejected pitches for a new installment due to licensing fees.
