The record is related to the now-infamous controversy tied to Star Wars Battlefront 2's loot boxes. In the midst of the controversy, an EA representative posted to Reddit justifying the publisher's loot box strategy. That post became the most downvoted comment in Reddit's history, a record unlikely to be broken in the foreseeable future.

To be exact, the Reddit post currently has 667,824 downvotes. The comment did peak at the number listed in the record, but has decayed likely due to deleted Reddit accounts. The second place comment, for comparison, currently has a measly 23,393 downvotes. It's a meme comment specifically asking for downvotes. Yes, EA's Reddit post is more than 2800% the value of the second place comment, making it a truly astonishing accomplishment.

Why the comment was downvoted to such extremes is both a simple and complicated topic. Obviously, the comment was met with frustration and anger. The comment was defending a particularly indefensible scheme, and it had a rather mocking tone, too. However, the controversy was also rooted in a long history of frustration regarding EA's business practices, too.
