Disney Plus has released the first trailer for Star Wars: The Bad Batch season 2. The new trailer features lots of action and the potential return of another character from The Clone Wars animated series.
The new trailer from Disney Plus for Star Wars: The Bad Batch season 2 opens with Clone Force 99 doing what they do best: fighting for their lives. The voice of Cid (Rhea Perlman) tells them that they can '"Buy their freedom," to which Bad Batch leader Hunter replies, "we're already free." Clearly, they are not out of the thick of it yet, as the evil Emperor Palpatine rises from his senate podium, lamenting that it's time for what he calls "a new era." The rest of The Bad Batch season 2 trailer features the rogue clone trooper unit fighting their way across the galaxy as they search for new allies in the fight against the Empire.
One of those new allies is a Wookie Jedi Youngling named Gungi, who first appeared in the Clone Wars animated series. The Bad Batch season 2 trailer doesn't outright confirm that this is Gungi, but the resemblance is uncanny. Gungi first appeared in several episodes of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, where he was featured as part of a group of Jedi younglings. Gungi and his fellow younglings ventured to the planet Illum with grandmaster Yoda to find kyber crystals for their lightsabers, an old Jedi tradition. Illum was also featured in the video game Jedi: Fallen Order and canonically the planet was eventually turned into Starkiller Base in The Force Awakens. Gungi was also featured in a story arc in The Clone Wars where he and the other younglings faced off against some pirates with Jedi padawan Ahsoka Tano. He even stood up to the dreaded General Grievous and lived to roar another day.
Considering that there are no Wookie Jedi running around in the original Star Wars trilogy, things don't look good for Gungi. Season 1 of The Bad Batch followed the members of Clone Force 99 in the immediate aftermath of order 66, during the fall of the republic and the rise of the Empire. The Bad Batch, unlike their clone counterparts, were able to resist their programming and are now fighting against the empire. This is likely how they will come across Gungi, since he will also be fighting for survival as the empire hunts the remaining Jedi in the galaxy. Season 1 already saw the return of another Clone Wars character, Captain Rex, Anakin Skywalker's personal clone commander who led the 501st and accompanied Ahsoka Tano on her siege of Mandalore.
While Gungi is a minor character in The Clone Wars, his return to the small screen confirms that The Bad Batch will continue to feature characters from previous Star Wars content. The Bad Batch season 2 trailer was just one of many trailers and sneak peeks revealed during Star Wars Celebration, the multi-day event celebrating all things Star Wars. Fans also got a look at the first trailer for Star Wars: Andor, the live-action series following rebel spy Cassian Andor (Diego Luna).
While Disney and Lucasfilm have been primarily focusing on their live-action content, The Bad Batch is just one of several animated projects coming to Disney Plus in the near future. This includes a second season for the anthology series Star Wars: Visions as well as Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi and the High Republic era kids show, Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures.
Star Wars: The Bad Batch season 2 will premiere exclusively on Disney Plus in the Fall of 2022.
