Squid Game premiered on the streaming service on September 17th, 2021, and season 2 was available on December 26th, 2024. The second season raised the stakes with terrifying and intense new games and complicated relationships between the players. With the third and final season coming soon, fans can't wait to find out how it all ends, but they're also wondering if it's really time to say farewell to these characters. Given the success of Squid Game, it would be surprising if the show didn't continue in some way after the series finale.

Squid Game Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk Has A Compelling Idea For A Spinoff

The characters in Squid Game

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Hwang Dong-hyuk explained the premise for a Squid Game spinoff he has thought of. He said:

"I actually had this faint ideation about possibly a spinoff — not a sequel, but maybe a spinoff about the three-year gap between season 1 and season 2 when Gi-hun [Lee Jung-jae] looks around for the recruiters. There is that three-year period, and maybe I could have a portrayal of what the recruiters or Captain Park [Oh Dal-su] or officers or masked men were doing in that period, not inside the gaming arena, but their life outside of that. So that is some vague ideation that I have that could possibly be developed in the future."

Considering the high ratings of Squid Game season 2, it would be surprising if the show didn't get at least one spinoff. Fans would definitely like to revisit this universe and see more of these complex characters. But while fans might expect a Squid Game spinoff to follow the events of the series finale, it's interesting to imagine what happened between seasons 1 and 2. This spinoff idea stands out since it wouldn't be focused on another deadly competition and would look at the lives that certain characters lived in between season 1 and season 2's games. Squid Game is so sad, dark, and gripping that a three-season story arc makes sense, but it would also be fascinating to see a spinoff about another aspect of the series that hasn't been shown before.

Hwang continued to Entertainment Weekly that he's open to spinoffs or sequels because "they say never say never" but there is "indeed a finale." Although it's good news that the show will have a proper send-off, there are several endings that fans don't want to see, and viewers are nervous that the final episode could be as devastating as the rest of the series.

With an 89% Rotten Tomatoes rating and 73% on the Popcornmeter, Squid Game remains one of the most popular Netflix series, along with Stranger Things and Wednesday. In the premiere, 456 players compete against one another, and while winning means becoming rich, not everyone is going to survive. Since everyone is bringing their problems and challenges to the game, their backstories make the show even more riveting. Hwang has been honest about how tough making the series has been and told BBC.com that eight or nine of his teeth fell out because it was so stressful.

Squid Game season 3 will premiere on Netflix on June 27th, 2025 and will likely be as big a hit as the previous two seasons. The VIPs are coming back for the third season, and the intense dynamic between the Front Man and Seong Gi-hun will continue. While fans can assume there will be a huge battle and that the new games will be even more horrifying than what has been shown previously, it feels like anything could happen. There's no doubt that the Squid Game season 3 finale will be memorable and haunting.
