Splitgate 1 Isn’t Going Away, But There’s a Catch

Splitgate dedicated servers will officially be closing down on August 29, but online features will remain accessible via peer-to-peer (P2P) hosting, allowing players to continue enjoying the multiplayer experience. Developed by 1047 Games, Splitgate is a Portal-inspired free-to-play sci-fi shooter that was released in early access on Steam in May 2019, with a console release and cross-platform matchmaking following it in June 2021. Over the course of its lifespan, the game enjoyed incredible critical success, though it struggled commercially.

In May 2025, 1047 Games released the Splitgate 2 open beta, which was quickly followed by a full release on June 6. Despite the initial hype, reception was mixed at best, with monetization issues and a lack of polish being cited as core concerns from the community. In July 2025, 1047 Games unlaunched Splitgate 2 and announced a return to open beta, acknowledging that the launch was way too early and the game was in need of major rework. In addition, the company also revealed that it would be discontinuing online support for Splitgate in August in order to focus its efforts exclusively on the sequel, a decision that sparked frustration among longtime fans.

Splitgate to Get P2P Hosting Following Server Shutdown

In a recent post on Twitter, 1047 Games confirmed that the dedicated servers for Splitgate are shutting down on August 29. In a fortunate turn of events, however, the company also revealed that the game's multiplayer will remain accessible via P2P web hosting on both PC and consoles. This method will allow players to act as hosts for online matches instead of relying on dedicated official servers, and it is an approach used in games like Bloodborne, GTA Online, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and many others.

The developers also acknowledged the impact of the Stop Killing Games movement on the decision and how the conversation surrounding an end-of-life plan for live-service games was what prompted them to ensure the Splitgate community would not lose online access to their favorite title. As a last goodbye, 1047 Games also announced that it would be releasing all previously “unreleased, stockpiled, or Work In Progress (WIP)” content for Splitgate and would give away all in-game cosmetics to everyone for free.

Community reaction to the decision was overwhelmingly positive, with fans conceding that self-hosted community servers were a neat solution to a thorny problem. The comment section was filled with praise for how the company handled the situation, as many expressed relief that the online multiplayer shooter will remain playable despite the server shutdown.
