A strange new Marvel’s Spider-Man mod swaps out Peter Parker with a Persona 3 party member who shares a surprising connection to the web-slinger. Insomniac’s series of open-world Spider-Man games have earned widespread acclaim ever since the first one launched on the PS4 in 2018. While Marvel’s Spider-Man and Spider-Man: Miles Morales were initially exclusive to PlayStation consoles, both were ported to PC last year - allowing a new group of players to experience Peter and Miles’s story ahead of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’s launch this fall.

This has also opened the door for a wide assortment of creative Marvel’s Spider-Man mods thanks to the PC’s more flexible platform. Many of these mods add new costumes to Marvel’s Spider-Man and Spider-Man: Miles Morales, such as Miles's 10th-anniversary Spider-Man suit and Peter's outfit from the end of Spider-Man: No Way Home. Others replace the web-slingers with completely different characters altogether, like the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles or Ezio Auditore from the Assassin’s Creed series.

The sky seems to be the limit on who can show up in a Marvel’s Spider-Man mod, and now a NexusMod user named MrHeathcliff5 has reskinned Peter Parker as Persona 3’s Makoto Yuki. The main hero of Atlus’s 2006 RPG classic is added as an alternate suit for Peter, allowing players to climb, swing, and fight their way across the open world of New York City as Makoto. Naturally, his Persona powers are replaced with Spidey’s trademark web abilities, but Persona 3’s cell-shaded anime style is faithfully recreated in MrHeathcliff5’s Makoto Yuki mod.

While Persona 3’s Makoto Yuki may seem like a random choice for a Marvel’s Spider-Man reskin at first glance, the troubled high-schooler-turned-supernatural investigator does share an interesting trait with Insomniac’s version of Peter Parker. Both are voiced by Yuri Lowenthal, who is also known for his work as Matt Miller in the Saints Row series and Lorath Nahr in Diablo 3. Marvel’s Spider-Man isn’t the only place gamers can hear him as Peter Parker either, as he also voiced the web-swinging hero in Marvel Super Hero Squad Online and Marvel’s Midnight Suns.

However, Yuri Lowenthal won’t be returning as Makoto Yuki for the upcoming Persona 3 Reload, as Aleks Le is replacing him in the remake’s all-new voice cast. Persona 3 fans already missing Lowenthal’s take on Makoto might get some novelty out of swinging across Manhattan as him in Marvel’s Spider-Man, especially with Peter Parker's trademark quips coming from the same talented actor.

Marvel's Spider-Man is available now on PC, PS4, and PS5.
