Spider-Man: Brand New Day is one of Marvel's most highly-anticipated projects. Set to come out in summer 2026, before the arrival of Avengers: Doomsday, Brand New Day will follow Peter Parker's story following the memory of his existence being wiped from everyone in the MCU, including his best friends Ned and MJ.
There is a lot to be excited about with this new Spider-Man movie, which will see Destin Daniel Cretton take the reins from Jon Watts. Cretton already proved his directing chops with Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, and it looks like he is bringing some of the magic that made that movie so great to Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
Spider-Man Brand New Day BTS Footage Reveals Practical Web-Swinging
Tom Holland was annoyed by the overreliance of CGI in previous Spider-Man movies
Normally, when a Marvel movie is filming, everything is pretty secretive. After all, the studio doesn't want too much getting out before people can see it. That doesn't seem to be the case for Spider-Man: Brand New Day (at least for the time being), as several X users posted behind-the-scenes footage showing clear shots of a Spidey stunt double performing practical web-swinging stunts, a far cry from the rubbery and lightweight CGI of previous films. Some of the footage even includes Spider-Man swinging away from a huge explosion. Needless to say, this is probably going to look great on the big screen.
All of these practical effects, along with the on-location shooting taking place in Glasgow, Scotland, are likely pleasing star Tom Holland, who had previously expressed the difficulties he had filming with such an overreliance on CGI for Spider-Man: No Way Home. Of course, that movie was shot during the pandemic, and therefore had more limitations on its production. Still, Holland found something as uncomplicated as a shot of walking down the street to be frustrating. Speaking on the Rich Roll podcast, Holland said:
When we're walking through New York, they sent a crew to New York to shoot the streets with a motion camera jib. Then they brought that piece of kit back to Atlanta and then they would make on the floor, 'There's an extra here. There's a dog here. There's a sidewalk here.' Then I'd have to map out what I was going to do in a pre-existing shot.
Holland also pointed out how this method of filming even had an effect on the storytelling, adding "Peter is supposed to be in a rush to get to Doctor Strange to ask him this question, and I found it really difficult to portray, 'I'm stressed and in a rush...but walking really slowly,' I actually think that shot isn't in the film because it didn't work." Holland also revealed his new practical Spider-Man suit, and has been seen wearing it on set. Hopefully, this means there will be less CGI replacement of Holland in each scene, and he will be able to actually physically be in the space wearing the suit like Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield before him.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day, like the other Tom Holland Spidey movies before it, is set to feature appearances from other MCU characters. This time around, Jon Bernthal's Punisher will be making an appearance, along with Mark Ruffalo returning as Bruce Banner/The Hulk. Stranger Things star Sadie Sink is also confirmed to appear in the movie, though as of right now her character is still under wraps. It will be interesting to see exactly how Brand New Day fits into the MCU timeline, especially as it will arrive in theaters before Avengers: Doomsday.
