Eagle-eyed Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 fans are noticing a potential gameplay clue hidden in the latest poster for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Insomniac formally announced the next installment in its critically acclaimed superhero series way back in 2021 with a brief but exciting teaser trailer for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. In it, Peter Parker and Miles Morales took to the streets of New York City to fend off criminals, only to come face-to-face with the terrifying Venom as Kraven the Hunter narrates about his desire for a “real challenge.”
Since then, there has been very little officially revealed about Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. Voice actors like Yuri Lowenthal and Tony Todd have shared various tidbits about how far along the game is in its development, and there have been numerous Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 plot leaks from unverified sources. Insomniac itself has remained tight-lipped about Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 though, so much so that eager fans have been scouring various other media in search of any morsel of new information - be it the recently released free Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 prequel comic or the upcoming Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse animated film.
The Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 version of Peter Parker is one of the many alternate web-slingers making a cameo appearance in Across the Spider-Verse, and a recent poster for the film has some players theorizing about a new ability he might have in his next game. Reddit user poklane pointed out that on the poster, the PlayStation Spider-Man appears with webbing under his arm, which many fans have dubbed “web wings.”
Spider-Man had these web-like wings under his arms in his earlier comic book appearances, and they have appeared on and off again in various media since. In the live-action MCU films, Peter uses them as a retractable glider courtesy of Tony Stark, and Marvel’s Spider-Man hinted at him once employing them in the Insomniac universe. However, Peter notes that the idea didn’t work out, causing him to scrap it prior to the game’s plot. This hasn’t stopped some fans from adding them to his Classic suit in Marvel’s Spider-Man mods.
Peter might revisit the concept of web wings in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, which could allow players to glide across New York City in a manner similar to Batman in the Batman: Arkham series. Of course, this is all just speculation from fans at this point, but the use of gliding as a supplement to Insomniac’s already excellent web-swinging mechanics is an enticing idea that could help make Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 bigger and better than the previous two entries when it swings onto the PlayStation 5 later this year.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 releases in 2023 for PS5.
