No matter what your play style is in Space Marine 2, players will take damage either from powerful ranged weapons or swarms of smaller enemies not giving you a chance to breathe. Your first line of defense is your armor, which is represented by the silver bars below your health that will be taken out first when you take damage.
After your armor is gone, your health will be lost next, with health also being a lot more difficult to get back. Before health is fully lost, it is contested; with contested health being a lot easier to get back if you know what you are doing.
Space Marine 2: How To Play As & Customize Chaos Space Marines
There are multiple chapters of Chaos Space Marines in Space Marine 2; here's how to play as them and customize them.
What Is Contested Health & How Do You Restore It
Contested Health is health that has been lost but can be restored if you act quickly. Contested Health is represented by the white line on your health bar, and it will quickly go down if you take more damage or take too long to restore it. To restore contested health, simply attack enemies with any method and deal damage without taking any more damage.
Contested Health will go down quickly, meaning players will need to play aggressively to get their health back, though this can also be a double-edged sword if they end up taking more damage than they got back.

How To Overheal Contested Health
While getting Contested Health back is great for restoring any recently lost health, a similar idea can be used to get back more health than was originally contested. Any enemy damaged when you have contested health will return some health back to the player, with the amount of health earned back being determined once an enemy is damaged. If you are using a single-target weapon, you'll usually get only the amount of Contested Health back as health.
Should you hit many enemies all at once, the amount of health being restored will be well above your Contested Health amount, and that too will be restored. Whenever you have Contested Health, use a massive area of effect weapon, grenade, or melee weapon to hit dozens of smaller swarm enemies to maximize the amount of health you get back.
Landing a good grenade in a group of gaunts can even see most of your health bar is returned no matter how much Contested Health you had left. If you're willing to risk it, you can get attacked by a weak enemy to get just a sliver of Contested Health before throwing a grenade to kill many and restore a lot of health.
