In South of Midnight, Floofs are used as a kind of upgrade currency. Once you have enough Floofs to afford your first Upgrade, the game will prompt you to open the Upgrade menu for the first time. There are eight General upgrades, and three Upgrades for each of the four main Spells that Hazel can cast, for a total of 20 Upgrades in South of Midnight.
Some Upgrades cost more than others, and the price increases the further into each tree you get – General upgrades on the bottom half of the screen cost more than the top half, and Spell upgrades on the far right cost more than the middle and left side. This guide explains how to get more Floofs in South of Midnight and how many Floofs you can expect to get from each method.
Find Floof Caches
Amount: 5 to 20 Floofs
Throughout each level in South of Midnight, Floofs can be collected by interacting with the large, glowing blue Floof caches. Though you may encounter many of these on the main path, most are hidden just out of sight, or in areas off the beaten path, that you will have to go out of your way to collect.
You may find a Floof cache on the top floor of a building that you can't see from the outside, or on an island that seems impossible to reach until you get other powers, like the ability to glide. If you want to get more Floofs to afford more Upgrades, it's worth going out of your way to find Floof caches because they can reward anywhere from 5 to 20 Floofs, while other methods to get Floofs in South of Midnight only reward 5.
Unravel Stigma
Amount: 5 Floofs
Though finding secret Floof locations in each level is the fastest way to get more Floofs, you can also get Floofs by unraveling Stigma you encounter throughout the world. You will find Stigma as part of main story missions and within combat arenas.
South of Midnight: How to Change Motion Sickness Settings (Motion Blur / Stop Motion Effect)
Certain default settings in South of Midnight might be off-putting for some players, so here's how they can improve their experience.
Combat areas usually have a bubble around them which forms the bounds of the arena, where Haints will spawn alongside a Stigma. After you defeat all Haints in the area, the Stigma will become interactable. Hazel can unravel the Stigma and clear the corruption around the immediate area (often revealing the way forward in the level).
When you clear Stigma, whether after combat or during main story missions, you will get 5 Floofs. It's not much, but if you go out of your way to complete every combat arena in each level – even the non-mandatory ones – South of Midnight players will be able to buy more upgrades faster.
Flip Tins
Amount: 5 Floofs
One other way you can get more Floofs in South of Midnight is to hunt down all Tin Flip locations. These metal sheet collectibles are strewn throughout every South of Midnight level, and if you use the Strand Push ability on one, you'll be rewarded with a nifty 5 Floofs. Plus, you'll get an achievement for the first one you find and flip, and another for finding every Flip Tin location.
Like the Floof reward from completing combat encounters, 5 Floofs aren't going to make or break your race to get all Upgrades in South of Midnight. But if you stop to Flip Tins when you see them, especially while exploring off the main path to find Floof caches, you'll find the Floofs will pile up over time.
Generally speaking, to get more Floofs in South of Midnight, you should prioritize hunting down secret Floof cache locations, Flip Tins along the way, and complete any combat arenas to unravel Stigma that you come across.
