Lies of P is getting a PlayStation 5 Pro upgrade, Neowiz has announced. The critically acclaimed soulslike will thus add to the growing list of games showcasing the capabilities of the upcoming PS5 model.
The PS5 Pro is scheduled for release on November 7. Priced at $699.99, Sony's mid-generation console upgrade promises to improve on its 2020 predecessor in three key ways: rendering speeds, ray tracing efficiency, and resolution upscaling. To that end, the device is equipped with a larger GPU that's claimed to offer up to 45% faster rendering speeds and up to 200% speedier ray tracing calculations. It's also meant to deliver greater detail on account of its support for PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), Sony's proprietary technology for AI-powered upscaling.
PS5 Pro Will Also Be a Big Deal for PS4 Games
The PlayStation 5 Pro will even provide visual improvements to PlayStation 4 games, as revealed by a product manager at Sony.
Lies of P is now set to take advantage of some of these capabilities, with Neowiz announcing that its hit soulslike has already earned its "PS5 Pro Enhanced" label. The game's support for Sony's upcoming console was incorporated into the latest Lies of P update, which rolled out on Tuesday, October 15. This turn of events will not come as a surprise to the most attentive of Lies of P fans, as the soulslike's PlayStation Store page already had it listed as "PS5 Pro Enhanced" since late September 2024.
How Will Lies of P PS5 Pro Version Be Different From the Original?
Neowiz's official changelog attached to the October 15 patch simply reiterates the publisher's announcement of PS5 Pro support, without elaborating on what the feature actually entails. But based on what PS5 architect Mark Cerny said about the upcoming device back in September, there is a plausible chance that Lies of P will offer just one graphics mode on the PS5 Pro. The existing current-gen console versions on both PlayStation and Xbox have three modes, offering players a choice between 30fps, 40fps, and 60fps targets. In contrast, the PS5 Pro might be able to incorporate all of the eye candy from the 30fps mode, which makes Lies of P look like one of the most graphically impressive games of 2023, while maintaining a stable 60fps.
Lies of P Most Likely Won't Do Anything With PS5 Pro's Ray Tracing Improvements
Since Lies of P doesn't support ray tracing, it won't be able to do anything with the PS5 Pro's improvements on this front, unless Neowiz implemented ray tracing support into the latest patch without saying so. While this isn't completely impossible on account of Unreal Engine 4 offering streamlined tools for enabling ray tracing, it is still unlikely. This is largely because the game already makes use of spectral lighting and other techniques that would necessitate its lighting models to be completely reworked or replaced if ray tracing were to be implemented, which would ostensibly require a massive effort.
Lies of P adds to the growing list of PS5 Pro Enhanced games, which already numbers over 60 titles. Alan Wake 2, Assassin's Creed Shadows, and Hogwarts Legacy are just some of the games promised to take advantage of Sony's upcoming console, as are Gran Turismo 7, Horizon Forbidden West, and Marvel's Spider-Man 2.
