Summary
- Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse's release is delayed again, now set for June 25, 2027.
- The production has faced multiple delays for various reasons over the years.
- Fans have been left waiting with minimal updates since Across the Spider-Verse was released in 2023.
Fans have been waiting a long time for the third entry in Sony's animated Spider-Verse trilogy, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse. Unfortunately, they're going to have to wait a bit longer than expected.
Up until Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was released in December 2018, general audiences weren't expecting very much from the Sony Pictures Animation film. After all, things had fallen apart with Andrew Garfield's Amazing Spider-Man franchise and Venom, which was released a few months before the first Spider-Verse movie, didn't exactly assuage fears that Sony was in over their heads with the Spider-Man film rights. At that point in time, Sony Pictures Animation wasn't seen as being in the same league as Pixar and DreamWorks, either. It's easy to forget following the Spider-Verse films, The Mitchells vs. The Machines, and KPop Demon Hunters, but Sony Pictures Animation was then best known for the Open Season and Hotel Transylvania franchises. Successful movies, sure, but critical darlings they were not. Then, Into the Spider-Verse came out, delighted audiences and critics, made a whole bunch of money, and kickstarted a new Spider-Man trilogy centered around Miles Morales. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse came in 2023, and Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse was supposed to follow in 2024, but, um, that didn't happen.
Beyond The Spider-Verse's Long Wait Is Actually A Good Thing
The third and final Spider-Verse movie is indefinitely delayed with no signs of a release date. However, it could benefit the film and its output.
Cover your eyes, Spidey fans. Yet again, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse's release date has been pushed back from June 4, 2027 to June 25, 2027. It's not exactly a disastrous delay, but it merely adds insult to injury at this point. You see, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse has had a bit of a tumultuous time with production, considering its release date has been pushed back several times.
Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse's Release Date Has Been Pushed Back Again
Is Sony Pictures Merely Torturing The Fandom?
First, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse was supposed to release on March 29, 2024, about a year after Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse's 2023 debut. The 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike caused production delays, but the film was still initially rumored to hit theaters at some point in 2024. Then, it was assumed that Sony was holding an "unspecified Marvel film" release date of June 27, 2025 for the film, but that mysterious spot was eventually wiped from Sony's calendar. After this, all bets were off as Sony and Spider-Verse producing duo Phil Lord and Christopher Miller were radio silent about the film's release.
Finally, after an eternity of zero concrete updates, Lord and Miller announced that the film would be released on June 4, 2027 earlier this year. Now, of course, the film has been pushed back yet again, this time only a few weeks. By the time Beyond the Spider-Verse releases in theaters, it will have been nearly nine years since the first Spider-Verse movie hit theaters. Let's put it this way: since 2018, Tom Holland will have appeared in three Spider-Man movies and at least two Avengers films (possibly three if he's secretly in Avengers: Doomsday) by the time the third Spider-Verse film comes out. Wild stuff.
