Sons of the Forest: Best Weapons To Use Against Cannibals

Cannibals are the main type of enemy in Sons of the Forest, alongside different types of mutants. There are six types of Cannibals — Regular, Dirty, Masked, Brute and Titan — that spawn as either male or female variations. All Cannibals have their own distinctive characteristics that make them difficult to deal with, but players can craft high-end weapons to fend them off easily.

In the event of mutilation, Cannibals will try to flee. Their limbs can be cut off, and they can be decapitated instantly. Early on in the game, players will encounter mainly Dirty Cannibals, which will observe from a distance, gather in their masses, and ambush. Most Cannibals are quick on their feet, but fairly weak against certain attacks, such as headshots or fire-based weapons like Molotov cocktails or torches. Crossbow

An Effective Long-Range Weapon

Ranged weapons are effective against Cannibals, as they can slow enemies down before they reach melee distance. Many Cannibals will attack with close-range weapons like spears, so sniping them from far away can prevent any close encounters that could result in taking considerable damage.

Crossbows also allow players to flank a group of Cannibals from a safe spot or vantage point. Typically, Cannibals are taken down with two shots to the body or one accurate headshot. It isn't just the Crossbow that does this either, as any variation of a bow will take a Cannibal down instantly with a headshot.

Modern Axe

A Powerful Close-Range Weapon

In Sons of the Forest, the Modern Axe is considered a powerful close-range melee weapon. It isn't just efficient at chopping down trees, as the Modern Axe is capable of taking down larger enemies or severing limbs with a few precise strikes. Its damaging attacks can cause enemies to stagger, even if the swing animation is a little slow.

Since it's good for both combat and logging purposes, the Modern Axe is a great asset to obtain early on in the game. The Axe reduces the time needed to gather wood and allows players to block and counter incoming attacks. Its slow speed isn't too daunting as it's compensated by the increased damage output.

Katana

A Swift Weapon For Severing Limbs

Oppositely to the Axe, the Katana makes up for its lack of blocking power by executing with impressive speed. It is one of the more proficient weapons when it comes to severing limbs to slow enemies down. In particular, this comes in handy for ambushes, since a horde of enemies can overwhelm a player quickly.

The Katana allows the player to slice off limbs and stop the onslaught of attacks by evening the playing field. A lot of players noted a sizable improvement of the Katana in Sons of the Forest compared to The Forest and, since a good portion of the melee weapons are worthless, the Katana is a good one to hold onto to get out of a tight pinch.

Upgraded Spear

An Upgraded Wepoan That Can Be Thrown

Compared to a regular Spear, an Upgraded Spear in Sons of the Forest has been endowed with strengthening materials like bones and cloth to make it more durable. To upgrade a spear, access the crafting menu and attach bones and cloth to a regular Spear in the inventory.

Spears can be thrown at enemies to deal damage from a distance, although it's typically recommended that regular Spears are thrown over Upgraded Spears, as it's possible to lose the item altogether if a player misses their target. Upgraded Spears deal more damage and last longer, so they become the perfect melee weapons against larger enemies or a gang of restless Cannibals.

Crafted Bow

A Long-Range Weapon With Faster Draw Speed Than Most Bows

The Crafted Bow has a faster draw speed than the Compound Bow, but it deals less damage as a drawback. One of the biggest advantages of the Crafted Bow is the fact that it can be created almost immediately after finding sticks and string, so it's one of the long-range weapons that won't take hours of scavenging to find.

The Crafted Bow is a great starter weapon as it gets the job done straight away. It comes in handy for not only taking out Cannibals, but also hunting wildlife. Generally speaking, the Crafted Bow is the ideal choice for handling Cannibals, whereas the Modern Bow is more reserved for Mutants. Since it's weaker but shoots faster, headshots are essential for using the Crafted Bow to its maximum potential.
