Summary

  • Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds will feature 23 characters, 24 main tracks, and 45 unique vehicles for players to choose from.
  • Leak revealed the launch roster with characters like Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles, and potential DLC additions from other Sega franchises.
  • Players can engage in network testing starting February 21 ahead of the kart racer's release later this year.

The Sonic the Hedgehog universe is filled with memorable characters and locations, and Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is already teasing a large number of racers and courses at launch. Another Sonic kart racer in the style of Sonic and Sega All-Stars Racing and Team Sonic Racing was announced at The Game Awards 2024 in December, with a brief trailer of Shadow driving through a mysterious portal that will serve as Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds’ primary mechanic.

Fans recently got a much closer look at Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds during this week’s PlayStation State of Play livestream. This longer trailer highlighted many of the returning characters that players will take control of in Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, as well as the game’s various alternate vehicle types like cars, jets, and even the air-powered hoverboards from the Sonic Riders series. There were also several different race courses, inspired by classic Sonic stages like Sonic and the Secret Rings’ Dinosaur Jungle and Sonic Adventure 2’s Prison Island.

2025 Could Be the Year of the Kart Racer

PlayStation's newest State of Play showcase included an upcoming kart racer that could contribute to 2025 being a huge year for the genre.

This could be only the tip of the iceberg, as a recent leak from shortly after the Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds trailer seemingly revealed the game’s full launch roster. As reported by Insider Gaming, this roster consists of 23 characters, ranging from major characters like Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Shadow to more recent additions to the Sonic universe like Sage from Sonic Frontiers. A now-deleted bullet point on the official Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds website (shared by Twitter user Sonic Paradise) hinted at even more characters being added in future DLC, including those from other Sega franchises.

The Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds website also states that the game will have 24 “main tracks,” with 15 “CrossWorlds” that players can access by using Travel Rings as shown in the recent Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds trailer. Players will also be able to choose from 45 “unique original vehicles” to race through these landscapes, as well as 23 different power-ups to help keep ahead of the competition.

The Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds trailer already confirmed a good many of the racers mentioned in the recently leaked roster leak, but there are still plenty of Sonic characters who have yet to be included. Aside from the mainline Sonic games, Sega could theoretically draw from the IDW Sonic the Hedgehog comics or live-action Sonic movies for characters and locations. Players will be able to take Sonic Racers: CrossWorlds for a test run ahead of its 2025 launch with a network test starting on February 21.
