Summary

  • Sonic Generations Xbox 360 version has been delisted.
  • The delisting is not due to the Xbox 360 marketplace shutdown but is likely to make way for Sonic X Shadow Generations.
  • The Steam version of Sonic Generations is currently still available, but there's a chance it could be replaced by the remaster.

The digital Xbox 360 version of Sonic Generations has been delisted. Sonic Generations was first released in 2011 for PC, PS3, Xbox 360, and 3DS. The game is considered one of the better post-Dreamcast Sonic games, with fans getting a kick out of how it blends 3D Sonic gameplay with more traditional 2D levels.

Considering how popular Sonic Generations was at launch, it's really no surprise that Sega is remastering it for modern platforms with some fresh content in tow. Sonic X Shadow Generations is launching on October 25 for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X. It features a remaster of the original Sonic Generations game but also comes with a slew of new levels themed around Shadow the Hedgehog. Sonic the Hedgehog fans are greatly looking forward to Sonic X Shadow Generations, but those who are nostalgic for the original Sonic Generations may be sad to learn that the game has recently been delisted from the Xbox 360 storefront.

Why Sonic Generations is Getting a Remaster

The upcoming remaster of Sonic Generations is a welcome surprise for the year, and though it seems to come out of nowhere, it makes sense overall.

Without warning, the Xbox 360 version of Sonic Generations has been delisted. While some may assume that this has something to do with the Xbox 360 marketplace shutting down, it does not. All other backward-compatible Xbox 360 games remain available to purchase digitally on the latest Xbox consoles. The real reason seems to be the simple fact that Sonic X Shadow Generations is launching in a couple of months, so it's likely to effectively erase and take the place of the original game.

Sonic Generations Xbox 360 Version Has Been Delisted

This has yet to happen for Sonic Generations on other platforms. Right now, the Steam version of the original Sonic Generations is still readily available to purchase. However, there is a non-zero chance that it, too, will be pulled from sale and replaced by Sonic X Shadow Generations at some point down the line. Stuff like this has happened with other remasters of older games, with perhaps the most infamous example being when the GTA Trilogy replaced the original PS2-era Grand Theft Auto games, as the remastered versions are generally considered to be far inferior to the originals.

Now, it's possible Sonic X Shadow Generations will have no added problems and will simply be better-looking Sonic Generations with extra content, so fans may not miss the original if it's delisted elsewhere. Regardless, it's always a bummer to see a game delisted, even if it's replaced by what is meant to be a superior version. Sonic X Shadow Generations has looked impressive so far, but time will tell how it stacks up.
