Keanu Reeves really brings his John Wick essence to the character even though Shadow doesn’t shoot up villains in the entirety of Sonic the Hedgehog 3. After the film wraps up, fans and newbies may want more Shadow, Sonic, and the rest, so these games are great ones to help fill the void until Sonic the Hedgehog 4 launches in theaters.

Shadow’s Origins

Sonic Adventure 2 was released on the Dreamcast initially but after that console sort of died out, Nintendo picked up the slack on the GameCube. That was one culturally significant thing about the game but Sonic Adventure 2 was also the title that introduced Shadow to the world. He was an antagonist to Sonic and had a similar origin story as the one viewers just saw in movie theaters with Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

Shadow was created by Professor Gerald Robotnik, Dr. Ivo Robotnik’s grandpa, and the project was shelved. Dr. Robotnik rebooted it to get Shadow to defeat Sonic and then battles ensue. It’s still one of the golden standards of the Sonic franchise and it can easily be played via backwards compatibility on consoles thanks to the various Xbox systems out there.

The mid-2000s were an angsty period in video games with every legacy series trying to be dark and edgy from The Legend of Zelda to Prince of Persia. Even Sonic can be included in that list of franchises thanks to Shadow the Hedgehog, Shadow’s first solo game. It gave Shadow a gun, the ability to drive a motorcycle, and he could also wield a sword.

What more could a fan want in this era of gaming? There were also a lot of branching timelines as Shadow could align himself with various factions, leading to some twisted endings. While not perfect, it’s one of those wild games that has to be seen to be believed even though it will be harder to play nowadays as it is trapped in the PS2 era of hardware.

4 Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood

The Blue Blur’s Only RPG

Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood was made by BioWare when they were just coming off the first Mass Effect. It was an RPG similar to the Mario & Luigi RPGs on handhelds. The perspective was top-down and players could explore levels and open up new pathways by switching between characters.

Enemies were located on the map and then combat would transition into turn-based battles once they were touched. The amount of playable party members was staggering including outliers like Shadow and Dr. Robotnik. For Sonic fans who love stories, engage with a plethora of characters, and enjoy a good RPG, this DS exclusive is begging to be rediscovered by a new generation. Fair warning though, it has a massive cliffhanger with no resolution.

3 Sonic Forces

Create Your Own Shadow

Sonic Forces is one of the wildest games in the series because it allows players to create their own character. The options were vast, and players came up with some unique designs that they shared online. It was like a template to finally live out their Sonic fan fiction set in the post-apocalypse after Dr. Robotnik has finally bested Sonic and friends.

While not the strongest 3D Sonic game overall, this character creator made it stand out as a must-play for those curious. Also, there was Shadow-based DLC for those who can’t get enough of the angsty fellow. It was released in the last generation of consoles, making it easy to pick up and play today.

2 Sonic Superstars

Co-Op Fun For Everyone

Sonic Superstars is a game for players who want to enjoy a Sonic game that celebrates teamwork. It’s a classic 2D entry featuring great sprite work and co-op for up to four players. Players can choose to be Sonic, Knuckles, Tails, or Amy and each character has a specific skill.

Tails’ flying ability, for example, is very useful for boss fights. Players can also collect Chaos Emeralds to get powers which they can equip in a stage which is a unique idea for the series. There’s also a multiplayer versus mode for those who want to engage in some mini-games. It was released in this generation on nearly every console under the sun.

1 Sonic X Shadow Generations

Shadow’s Finest Hour

Sonic Generations was a game that cured a drought because there were a lot of unfavorable Sonic games during the first HD generation of consoles. It was a return to basics but also a celebration of the entire series. Sonic met his younger self in the console generation who was silent and a bit more squat. Together, they traveled through time and played through classic levels, reimagined, and other characters like Tails joined the ride too.

Sonic X Shadow Generations is a remaster of that game which includes a separate campaign starring Shadow. His levels are also based on old ones, but he gets a lot of cool new powers along the way from surfing to flying. It’s the perfect game to celebrate after watching Sonic the Hedgehog 3 since it includes Shadow and it just came out.
