Story spoilers for Sonic Frontiers' third DLC update have already leaked online. The second major update to the game, the Sonic Birthday Bash Update, was released very recently for the 32nd anniversary of the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. This update included new open-zone challenges, new collectable Koco, a new game plus mode, and the return of Sonic's iconic spin-dash move. The update also included something that was intended to be a surprise but was left in the code, the contents of Update 3.According to Sonic Frontiers' DLC roadmap, the third update promises players an entirely new story to play through, alongside brand-new playable characters. Since the second update, dataminers had found evidence of these new playable characters, which are likely to be Tails, Amy, and Knuckles. Dataminers have been digging through the recent update that launched recently, with some finding more evidence of these three being playable. The biggest thing that was found however was the script of the third update. This discovery was first posted by Bluwolf on Twitter, who had been posting clips of animations and files that were present in Sonic Frontiers that were likely meant to be incorporated in the game's third update. What they had found in the files, however, was some of the Update 3 story script. While Bluwolf was courteous enough to not share the details about what was present in the story, it's likely the details of the script have already been leaked online, so fans should be cautious when browsing social media.
According to some reactions of those who read the files that were leaked, the script is incomplete, and it's missing a lot of context. That being said, early impressions of the content are positive, with many believing what is included could add a lot to the story and recontextualize Sonic Frontiers' ending as well. There are still plenty of details missing from the complete picture, so opinions can change once the full update releases later this year.
When it comes to new playable characters, the leaks confirm that Sonic's cyberspace displaced friends will be playable. According to Bluwolf, Tails will be able to fly with his two tails and fight with the help of machines. Knuckles uses his fists to duke it out, while Amy has both her hammer and apparently Tarot Cards as weapons in the game. While the reception of the first two updates has been fairly muted, many are very excited to what the third update will bring.
Sonic Frontiers is available for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
