A Sonic Team producer expressed their wishes to remake one of the most critically reviled entries in the Sonic franchise, 2006's infamous Sonic the Hedgehog. Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), or known simply as Sonic '06, was originally released on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 consoles. However, due to the game's troubled production schedule and rushed development, Sonic '06 was immediately lambasted for being a buggy, unplayable mess. It ended up causing a lot of damage to the franchise's reputation and is known as one of the worst games of all time.
Despite its many issues, some fans think Sonic '06 deserves a second chance. While Sega had mostly distanced itself away from the critically reviled title, Sonic '06 has been revisited in a few different ways throughout the 2020s. Various Sonic Symphony concerts often include pieces of music from the infamous game, and one of the game's villains, Mephiles the Dark, was included as a boss fight in Shadow Generations. Even Elise, the human princess that has been a subject of mockery, recently made a re-appearance in a side story. With Sega's softening stance on Sonic '06, it appears Sonic Team itself also wants to remake the game.
One Important Aspect of Sonic X Shadow Generations May Hint at Something Bigger
Sonic X Shadow Generations ties prominent lore together with one part of Shadow's story going nowhere, but the future may be full of surprises.
Series creative director Kazuyuki Hoshino and Sonic X Shadow Generations producer Shun Nakamura were recently at an Indonesian Sonic Fan Meet event. One of the things brought up during the event was what the developers are looking to do next for the Sonic the Hedgehog series, such as a remaster or remake of past games like Sonic Heroes or 2006. While Hoshino says he'd like to explore a possible Dr. Eggman spin-off exploring the Robotnik's family history, Nakamura says that both old and new games remain appealing. Previously, he personally expressed the desire to remake 2006.
Sonic X Shadow Generations Producer Personally Wants to Remake Sonic '06
A potential remake of Sonic the Hedgehog 2006 is one thing that fans have been asking for a while now. Sonic '06 has a number of interesting concepts, characters, and story ideas that are rife for exploration. Mephiles the Dark is one of the Sonic franchise's most popular villains that many lament as wasted potential and could get a do-over with a remake. Similarly, Silver the Hedgehog, a psychic hedgehog introduced in this game, has since become a regular of the cast and a remake could properly re-introduce him to newer audiences.
With the Sonic franchise's newly found renaissance following the live-action movies, along with the sales successes of Sonic Frontiers and Sonic X Shadow Generations, a remake of Sonic '06 could help potentially turn its bad reputation into a more positive one. Hoshino stated that the next step forward for the Sonic series is to take inspiration from past iterations of the franchise, so maybe Sonic '06 could be one of them. These statements are all just ideas and not actual projects in development at this time, however.

In Soleanna, the City of Water, lives Princess Elise, The keeper of the Flames of Disaster,
an artifact linked to the famous Chaos Emeralds.
In an attempt to gain control of the Flames of Disaster for his own nefarious ends, Dr.
Eggman kidnaps the Princess. Now it's up to Sonic to set out once again to secure the
Chaos Emeralds and to rescue Princess Elise from the clutches of Eggman.
You'll not only play as Sonic, but also as Shadow the Hedgehog, a dark and mysterious
rival of Sonic's who is able to drive vehicles, and Silver the Hedgehog, a time travelling
hedgehog with psychokinetic powers.
Each character also has a partner character that can join in and help out from time to time
on specific levels, including such favourites as Miles "Tails" Prower, Knuckles the Echidna
and Amy Rose.
