Shin Megami Tensei 5: Vengeance has offered fans a glimpse at some of its new story tidbits, demons, and locations, among other novelties. The content was showcased as part of the newly debuted SMT5: Vengeance trailer.

Atlus and Sega officially announced SMT5: Vengeance in late February. The definitive edition of the fifth numbered SMT entry is scheduled to hit the market in June. It will combine the base game with all of its existing DLC, in addition to offering an alternate story route, some new combat elements, and demons.

Some Familiar Demons Are Returning in SMT5: Vengeance

Some of that content has now been teased in the game's second gameplay trailer, which Sega shared on April 5. The three-minute video confirms that the RPG's cast of demons will expand to include Gurulu, Azazel, and Mastema, each of which was previously featured in at least two other series entries. New locations are another thing that fans can expect from SMT5: Vengeance, with its latest trailer featuring glimpses of a few such areas. It would seem that the game will offer fans additional opportunities to explore the regular, non-apocalyptic Tokyo.

The promotional video also appears to be teasing at least one demon that's completely new to the series. Called Amabie, the creature can be seen around the 0:54 mark, and seems to be based on an eponymous mermaid with a beak from Japanese mythology. Curiously enough, Atlus actually shared the concept art of this creature in 2021, months before Shin Megami Tensei 5 was released to critical acclaim. But the artwork itself wasn't framed as a content teaser, having instead been attached to a message of hope in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic due to the Edo period belief that amabie can dispel sickness.

Another SMT5: Vengeance feature revealed in the game's second trailer concerns Nahobino, as the game's protagonist is seen rocking a new outfit at one point in the trailer. Based on what little the video shows, it would appear that this won't be a mere costume so much as a completely new form of the character. If that assumption is accurate, the new look will likely be tied to the game's alternate story path, called Canon of Vengeance.

The trailer also offers another look at Yoko Hiromine, a new character that the protagonist will meet early on during the story. Her exact role in the Canon of Vengeance remains unclear. While it was initially planned to debut on June 21, SMT5: Vengeance has recently been rescheduled for a June 14 release. Pre-orders for the game have been available since late February.

Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance consists of two complete story paths: experience a brand-new route, the "Canon of Vengeance" – a dramatic tale of revenge by the fallen, centered around new characters and an enigmatic cohort of demons, the Qadištu, who plot their own dark designs apart from the war of those who fight to maintain order and those who seek to defy it. Or explore the original story told in Shin Megami Tensei V, the "Canon of Creation" – an eternal conflict between angels and demons, in which the protagonist fights for the world’s fate.

When a grisly murder scene in modern-day Tokyo blocks our protagonist’s walk home, an unplanned detour leaves him buried and unconscious. He awakens in a new Tokyo, a wasteland ravaged by apocalypse now called Da’at… but before bloodthirsty demons can claim his life, a savior emerges, and the two of them unite to become a mighty being, neither human nor demon: a Nahobino.

With newfound power, the protagonist ventures through Da'at, an enigmatic realm filled with mythical deities and demonic tyrants in constant conflict for survival. Searching for answers, the protagonist must forge his own path in a battle between angels and demons to dictate the fate of the world.
