A Skyrim fan fired up their forge and crafted an impressive replica of Wuuthrad, the legendary axe of the Nord hero called Ysgramor, out of steel. When their work was done, the Skyrim fan posted a few pictures of Wuuthrad on social media and received compliments and questions about the creative process behind the battleaxe.
As the weapon of the Nord hero Ysgramor, the founder of the Companions guild in Skyrim, Wuuthrad is a two-handed battleaxe that does extra damage to elves of all kinds. This is apparent in the axe's design, as in the middle of it is the face of a screaming elf crying in agony. In addition, the elf's "ears" make up both sides of the weapon. In battle, the damage bonus was applied to any race with the suffix -mer in their name, excluding orcs, unless it was overridden by a different enchantment by the player. With a base attack power of 25, which was boosted to 30 against elven foes, Wuuthrad is far from the most potent weapon in the game despite its reputation. However, Skyrim players who complete the Companions quest series early enough in the game will get considerable use out of Wuuthrad.
Despite its grisly design, the Companions' signature weapon was brought to life by one dedicated Skyrim player. A Reddit user named Hjalmrjarn posted three pictures of their steel recreation of Wuuthrad on the r/skyrim subreddit. The OP stated that the axe was made three years prior, to celebrate Skyrim's 10th anniversary. Using an arc welder, some heavy rods for the handle, and grade 5160 steel bars, the OP said they heat-treated the edges of the axe blade to add some toughness to it. However, Wuuthrad's thickness made the blade capable of withstanding even the most strenuous tests. The OP said that Wuuthrad weighed about eight kilograms, which is just over 17 pounds, and compared it to an "anchor on a stick" when swinging it around.
For the fine details that adorned the handle and blade of Wuuthrad, Hjalmrjarn used various grinders and cold chisels to carve them. The OP then clarified that the only part of Wuuthrad that was not made of steel were the tears on the elf's face, as those were made of sterling silver inlays. For their effort, other Skyrim fans praised Hjalmrjarn and made some references to Ysgramor and the Companions in their comments.
Between Skyrim fans painting their favorite locales, and smiths like Hjalmrjarn forging weapons from the game, Bethesda's open-world RPG is still a part of gaming culture. It remains to be seen when news of The Elder Scrolls' next chapter will appear in the future.
