Summary

  • Sega renews its Skies of Arcadia trademark, sparking hopes for a potential revival.
  • Despite the lack of a sequel, Skies of Arcadia remains a beloved classic with dedicated fans.

Fans of Skies of Arcadia may have reason to celebrate, as Sega has registered fresh trademarks for the long-dormant franchise. The cult classic role-playing game was originally released way back in 2000, with this year marking its 25-year anniversary. Skies of Arcadia received widespread acclaim at the time of release and has an army of established fans, which makes it a prime candidate for a revival.

Sega boasts many classic franchises, including legendary titles like The House of the Dead and Panzer Dragoon. Yet, many of these games still haven’t received the green light for a reboot on newer platforms, which could seriously improve the visuals and gameplay. Skies of Arcadia, known for its vibrant colors, captivating worlds, and memorable characters, would be especially exciting to see brought to life with the power of modern systems.

As reported by SEGA Informant on Twitter, Sega re-registered the trademark for Skies of Arcadia. The insider also reveals that Sega has filed a new trademark for the game's Japanese counterpart, Eternal Arcadia. While the developments are exciting, renewing trademarks doesn’t necessarily mean a future remake is in the works.

Sega Registers Trademark for Skies of Arcadia

Despite its popularity, the game never got a sequel. However, two years after the original release in 2002, the Dreamcast RPG got an enhanced port, Skies of Arcadia Legends, which launched on the Nintendo GameCube. For years, rumors have circulated about a potential Skies of Arcadia remaster, but so far, nothing has come to fruition.

While turn-based RPGs aren’t as popular as they were in the Dreamcast era, Skies of Arcadia remains one of the best JRPGs to never get a sequel. The game's beloved characters have popped up in other games over the years, such as Vyse's appearance in Valkyria Chronicles, hinting that Sega hasn’t forgotten about it. Fans of the game will have to wait and see if the trademark filing leads to a much-anticipated sequel, re-release, remaster, or remake.

Nostalgia-driven games have a unique ability to capture the imagination of players, especially ones that have as much love and legacy as this legendary title. Even 25 years later, Skies of Arcadia still inspires new games like Sky Oceans: Wings for Hire. If any retro game deserves a revival, few are better suited than Skies of Arcadia. With modern technology, game developers could explore and expand on all the elements that made the game so popular in the first place.
