Summary

  • Sinners, a vampire horror film, competes head-to-head with MCU heavyweights in the box office stamina.
  • Despite stiff competition, Sinners continues to perform well, posting impressive drops in fourth-week grosses.
  • Sinners challenges Thunderbolts at the box office, grossing $290 million globally, aiming for the top horror movie spot in the US.

Four weeks in theaters have failed to tire the vampires in Sinners. Though overall raw numbers are no contest, the Ryan Coogler film is going toe-to-toe with Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame in terms of box office stamina.

Set in the 1930s American South, Sinners is a vampire horror-thriller that follows the twin brothers Smoke and Stack (both played by Michael B. Jordan) as they return home to open a juke joint, only for their community to be plunged into chaos by a sudden vampire outbreak. Sinners opened with $45.6 million domestically and $15.6 million from 71 overseas markets, ousting fellow Warner Bros. Title A Minecraft Movie as the top dog in the U.S. The film is also second to Jordan Peele’s Nope ($44.4 million) in terms of the strongest domestic debuts for an original horror film, although the director still holds the ultimate record with US ($70.3 million).

According to industry analyst Luiz Fernando on X, Sinners posted $2.9 million and $2.3 million on its fourth Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively, in the United States—an impressive -32% and -27% drop from the previous weekend. It’s a -32% and -27% dip from the previous weekend—the second-best among April releases and some of the best for R-rated flicks. On the latter record, only Joker, Oppenheimer, The Passion of Christ (for Tuesday alone), and Deadpool & Wolverine posted better fourth Tuesday and Wednesday figures than Sinners in the R-rated world. Even Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame managed lower figures on the same days.

Sinners Is Also Challenging Thunderbolts*

The MCU's Latest Movie May Be Fresh, But It Lacks Sinners' Legs

“Earth’s mightiest heroes” aren’t the only Marvel squad whose feathers have been ruffled by Sinners’ vampires. After grossing $2.4 million on its second Wednesday (a -44% drop), Thunderbolts* nearly ceded its top spot at the box office to Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan. Among MCU flicks, it tops Thor ($2.3 million), The Incredible Hulk ($2.1 million), Captain America: Brave New World ($1.6 million), Eternals ($1.6 million), The Marvels ($1.5 million) and Ant-Man and the Wasp Quantunmania ($1.5 million), but still less than Iron Man ($3.1 million).

As of this writing, Sinners has earned $290 million globally, $220 million of which comes domestically. That’s still a long way to the top of the horror movies all-time list—it’s still at 23rd—but only It ($328.8 million), The Sixth Sense ($293.5 million), Jaws ($260 million) and The Exorcist ($232.9 million) stand between this film and the title of top grossing horror movie in the United States. Maxing out at $300 million domestically would be a stretch for Sinners, especially given the coming competition in the coming weeks. Early tracking for Disney’s Lilo and Stitch live-action remake predicts a colossal $100 million Memorial Day Weekend. But the fact that a vampire-horror is going head-to-head with several MCU heavyweights is a feat in itself.
