Summary

  • Sinners director, Ryan Coogler, could consider a sequel despite initially viewing the film as a standalone story.
  • The vampire film blends Deep South culture with horror elements, featuring a talented ensemble cast.
  • Coogler's involvement in various projects may delay the possibility of a Sinners sequel in the near future.

Sinners director Ryan Coogler has addressed the chances of seeing a sequel to the popular supernatural horror that’s become many cinephiles’ movie of the year so far. Set in the Mississippi Delta during the 1930s, twin brothers visit their hometown to begin a new business endeavor, and unbeknownst to them, a great evil lurks in the shadows. Coogler previously noted that he considered Sinners to be a standalone story, but perhaps its box office success and popularity have provoked another idea in the auteur’s mind.

Sinners puts its spin on the vampire sub-genre by integrating horror elements within Deep South culture, combined with a stellar cast. The ensemble features a talented line-up, including lead Michael B. Jordan, who worked with Coogler previously on Creed and Black Panther, Marvel stars Wunmi Mosaku and Hailee Steinfeld, and 28 Years Later cameo star Jack O’Connell. Features such as From Dusk Till Dawn, Interview with the Vampire, and Shadow of the Vampire are some of the recommended movies to watch in the interim that share Sinners’ vibe, at least until fans hear about concrete sequel plans.

Ryan Coogler Is Leaving the Door Open for Sinners 2

Sinners

During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Coogler was asked if a Sinners sequel was in the pipeline. “It’s tough to say now…You never want to close the door on anything,” Coogler responded, which was a positive answer that will likely keep the fandom hopeful. The director also reiterated that he had always intended for the project to be a “full meal of a movie,” allowing audiences to digest the story as a complete arc. Fans expected to hear rumors of a sequel brewing after the movie’s lucrative run at the box office, and star Li Jun Li was surprised Sinners achieved such a steep financial victory.

Within the same interview, Coogler mentioned filming Sinners was a “break from franchise filmmaking,” referring to his ongoing time spent in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Coogler helmed 2018’s Black Panther and its 2022 sequel, Wakanda Forever, and the director also served as executive producer on the recently-released Ironheart series on Disney+ and the upcoming Eyes of Wakanda animated mini-series. Coogler was even rumored to be in the running for directing Avengers: Secret Wars, before the returning duo Anthony and Joe Russo took the reins. Since Marvel projects usually deliver open-ended conclusions to tie into future installments, it makes sense that Coogler wanted to invest in a complete story this time around. However, in the current climate, studios are keen to demand more from box office successes.

If Coogler wasn’t busy enough producing for Marvel and helming the currently in-development projects, Wrong Answer and Scenes for Minors, the director is also confirmed to be leading an exciting reboot. Previously, Coogler provided an update on The X-Files reboot he’ll be working on and even commented on original star Gillian Anderson’s potential involvement. With several diverse projects demanding the director’s attention of late, a Sinners sequel would likely not come to fruition until much further down the line, if Coogler is keen to continue the story, that is.
