The long-awaited fan-made remake of The Simpsons: Hit and Run has finally been completed. After over a year in development, this Simpsons: Hit and Run project shows what an official remake could look like.

Fans have been asking for an official Simpsons: Hit and Run remake for years, but so far those calls have gone unanswered. While the game's developer, Radical Entertainment, is still in business, it almost certainly holds no rights to the game and hasn't developed a title in almost a decade now. It isn't clear exactly what company has the power to make an official remake happen, but right now, it certainly doesn't seem to be on the way any time soon. For now, gamers will have to settle for incredible fan-made projects like this instead.

The impressive remake was shown off in its finished state by its creator, YouTuber reubs. Footage included shows off several of the game's most popular missions, and it looks exactly how most players will remember it, powered by Unreal Engine 5 to give it fancy new lighting. While it's mostly complete, there are some areas that aren't quite done. The interior of Springfield Elementary remains untextured, and it seems reubs will be leaving it that way for now. Copyright issues mean that reubs is unable to release the game to the public, as it uses assets from the original game. With this in mind, it's understandable that they may not want to work on The Simpsons: Hit and Run remake any longer.

The project entered full development in June 2022, and the progress of The Simpsons: Hit and Run remake has been chronicled in a series of videos on reubs' YouTube channel. It's been interesting to see it come along, with each individual element that made the original game so iconic replicated in painstaking detail, resulting in one of the best fan remakes ever made. It isn't yet clear what reubs' next project will be, but it has been confirmed to be a remake of another classic game, which is sure to excite long-term fans of his Simpsons: Hit and Run remake.

Despite fans going as far as signing petitions for an official Simpsons: Hit and Run remake, it seems unlikely at this point. The last big video game based on the franchise was 2007's The Simpsons Game, so it seems as though the franchise's life on major platforms is at an end for now. Of course, nothing is impossible, but players certainly shouldn't hold their breath on the subject.

The Simpsons: Hit And Run was released in 2003 on GameCube, PC, PS2, and Xbox.
