Soon after beginning your adventure through Pharloom in the Moss Grotto, Hornet will come across Shell Shards for the first time. Shell Shards are a type of crafting currency that doesn't have a use until a bit later on in the game. But after getting a few hours in, Silksong players may discover that there is a Shell Shard limit.

After trying out some Tools, Silksong players may be wondering how to increase Tool ammo, too. Thankfully, there is one upgrade that allows players to carry more of both – this guide explains how to get more Shell Shards and directs players towards the first Tool Pouch upgrade in Silksong, which increases the number of Shards and Tool ammo Hornet can carry.
How To Get & Use Shell Shards in Silksong
Shell Shards Are Used For Crafting Gear, Replenishing Tools
In Silksong, Shell Shards are a type of currency that is primarily used to refill Hornet's equipped Tools. Whenever you rest at a bench, you will spend some Shell Shards to replenish your Tool ammo. Some quests in Silksong require players to donate a certain number of Shell Shards, too, like the Bone Bottom Repairs quest, which requires 200x Shell Shards to fulfill.
Players can get more Shell Shards in Silksong by either defeating enemies or breaking Shell Shard deposits throughout Pharloom. Almost every enemy in the game will drop a small number of Shell Shards upon defeat (alongside Rosaries), which look like small silver triangles that fly out of dead enemy bodies.
Shell Shard caches can take many forms, but are typically represented by shiny silver textures. In one area, you might see a particularly shiny rock that spawns Shell Shards when hit. In another area, you might see a taught rope with embedded Shell Shards that will fly off if you attack the rope.
You can also equip specific Tools to get more Shell Shards. For example, the Shard Pendant increases the number of Shell Shards that drop from enemies while equipped.
How To Carry More Shards & Tools in Silksong
Upgrade Your Tool Pouch to Increase Max Shards & Carry More Tools
By default, the maximum number of Shell Shards Hornet can carry in Silksong is 400. Each active Tool (like the Sharp Pin, which launches a projectile forward) has a maximum ammo limit, too. If you upgrade the Tool Pouch, you can increase both max Shell Shards and max Tool ammo at the same time.
To carry more Shards and increase your max Tool ammo, Silksong players must purchase this Tool Pouch upgrade. The first that most players will come across is located in Pilgrim's Rest, at the top of the Far Fields.
Pay the 30 Rosaries fee to enter the building in Pilgrim's Rest, then talk to Mort to see his wares.
The Tool Pouch Upgrade costs 220 Rosaries, so be prepared to break some Rosary Strings in your inventory to be able to afford this. Once acquired, your max Shards will increase to 500, and all of your Tools will load extra ammo every time Hornet rests on a bench.
There are likely multiple ways to increase max Shards and Tool ammo in Silksong, in addition to the Tool Pouch upgrade sold by Mort at Pilgrim's Rest. This guide will be updated with additional Tool Pouch locations as we continue to explore Pharloom.
