The first previews for Silent Hill f are rolling in, and the game apparently features combat that’s very reminiscent of a Soulslike. NeoBards’ upcoming entry in the acclaimed survival horror franchise has a lot of fans filled with anticipation. After a couple of lackluster Silent Hill releases in recent years, the arrival of Bloober Team’s Silent Hill 2 remake revived enthusiasm for the next mainline title in the series, Silent Hill f.
With its release rapidly approaching, new trailers and details about Silent Hill f have been trickling out for gamers to lap up. One tidbit that has some fans feeling a little uncertain is the game’s approach to dealing with foes. According to Producer Motoi Okamoto, enemies will be more challenging and combat in Silent Hill f will be more action oriented and melee focused than previous releases like the recent Silent Hill 2 remake.
Silent Hill Fans Just Got an Exciting Update About the Next Game
Silent Hill fans are in for a treat, thanks to the devs sharing some interesting details about the newest entry in the survival horror franchise.
Silent Hill f - A Soulslike?
During a recent event held at Konami’s Tokyo offices, many media outlets got a hands-on preview of what Silent Hill f has to offer. One word has appeared in many of the resulting articles: Soulslike. Protagonist Hinako has a stamina bar, which players will have to keep an eye on while attempting to land light or heavy attacks on the creatures she encounters. Players will need to carefully time their dodges, while also watching for a sign that an enemy is open to a counterattack. Of course, this is more simplistic than many Soulslike combat systems, and from what some previewers are saying, it leaves something to be desired.
The main issue seems to be that a single dodge or strike eats up a sizeable chunk of Hinako’s stamina, and it takes approximately a second and a half before the stamina bar even begins to refill. This can lead to a situation where—when fighting a boss that attacks several times in a row, for example—players will be stuck in defensive mode, dodging over and over and rarely having a chance to hit back. Like in previous games, sometimes the only viable solution may be to simply run away, especially when facing multiple enemies at once.
Luckily, unlike most Soulslikes, Silent Hill f has difficulty settings that can make combat a little more palatable. But the developers made other combat-related choices that have some fans regauging their excitement level for the game. For one, weapons wear down over time, and certain actions like blocking speed up this degradation. There are repair kits scattered about, but more often, players will constantly be on the lookout for replacement pipes, knives, and baseball bats. The other complaint some gamers will have is the lack of a lock-on mechanic, which could lead to some frustrating moments. Ultimately, only player feedback when the game finally releases on September 25 will reveal whether the combat in Silent Hill f is a hit or miss.
