MAJOR SPOILERS for Silent Hill 2 follow.
Silent Hill 2 players have made a discovery regarding James' late wife, Mary. The finding confirms a long-standing belief fans of the survival horror game have had for years, albeit with a bit of a twist in comparison to how most Silent Hill 2 fans imagined it.
Silent Hill 2 is a legendary survival horror game, and Bloober Team's recreation of it is bringing the title to an all new generation of gamers. While remaking a game like Silent Hill 2 is bound to divide some long-time fans, most critical reviews of the title so far have been positive, praising the developers for their attention to detail and faithfulness to the original plot. As it turns out, the Bloober Team also answered a long-held question about James Sunderland and his wife, Mary.
Some Silent Hill 2 Remake Fans Get Wrong Version of the Game
Some Silent Hill 2 remake fans who pre-order the much-anticipated title are frustrated because they received the wrong version of the game.
Silent Hill 2 players like Twitter user Steven_VP1 have discovered that Mary's body is in the car that James drove to the town of Silent Hill, seen at the beginning of the game. Players have discovered that when looking in the back seat of James' car, Bloober Team went through the trouble of actually including a blanket in the back seat that covers a human body-like shape. With Unreal Engine 5 camera tools, Steven_VP1 was able to see it in more detail, revealing that it does appear to be a body hidden under the blanket.
Was Mary Always in James' Car?
For years, players have wondered if Mary's body was actually included in the vehicle in the original Silent Hill 2, suspecting that it was in the trunk. However, using third-party tools, players clipped through and peeked inside the trunk only to find it empty. It makes sense, considering no one would be able to see in there in proper gameplay, and minimizing assets as much as possible would have helped the game to work better on the PS2. Between the In Water and Rebirth Silent Hill 2 endings, though, players got the feeling that it was there all along, even if they weren't allowed to see it.
In 2023, game developer and creature designer of the original Silent Hill trilogy, Masahiro Ito, spoke about the long-standing belief, stating that James would have put his wife's body in the backseat, not the trunk. His reasoning for this is that James still loves Mary, and wouldn't do something as cold with her remains as putting them in the trunk. However, Ito also pointed out that if they had made it visible in Silent HIll 2, it would have given away the ending entirely, so it was left out. It seems that Bloober Team took this into consideration, making it vague and partially hidden. Players who don't yet know about the truth in Silent Hill 2 may not notice it at all, and even if they do see it, they may not think anything of it. However, those who know will likely appreciate this nod to the reality of the situation.
