A new mod for Silent Hill 2’s remake completely eliminates the game's fog. Silent Hill’s constant fog is perhaps the most iconic element in the Silent Hill franchise, and getting rid of it will completely change the experience of anyone playing the new Silent Hill 2 remake.

The Silent Hill 2 remake was originally announced in 2022, and it was initially met with a mixture of excitement and skepticism from old-school fans of the franchise. Most fans were excited to see one of the most classic survivor horror games with improved graphics and controls. Others, however, initially doubted Bloober Team’s ability to deliver a thrilling experience. Silent Hill 2 was released for PS5 and PC on October 8, and the first mods for the game are already coming out.

How Silent Hill 2’s Remake Undercuts the Original’s Greatest Melee Weapon

Silent Hill 2's remake is hardly a one-to-one adaptation, and while it is faithful in many ways there is one iconic item it disappointingly subtracts.

One of the new Silent Hill 2 remake mods is the “Silent Hill 2 HD Collection,” created by FrancisLouis and uploaded on Nexus Mods. In short, the mod completely removes the fog from Silent Hill 2, making one of the best entries in the Silent Hill franchise look completely different. The result is arguably worse than having the fog, as it greatly diminishes the game’s scary and claustrophobic atmosphere, but this seems to be a joke mod. To install it, gamers have to download it from Nexus Mods and drop the pak file on SHProto\Content\Paks\~mods.

"Silent Hill 2 HD Collection" Mod Gets Rid of Silent Hill 2 Remake's Fog

Long-time Silent Hill 2 fans will likely understand that the mod is poking fun at the infamous Silent Hill HD Collection, released in 2012 for PS3 and Xbox 360. This collection is largely seen as the worst way to play the iconic Konami game, and some gamers have even compiled everything that’s wrong with the Silent Hill HD Collection in the past. Despite several performance and audio issues, however, what really stands out in the collection is that the graphics just got much worse, with heavily reduced fog coverage, essentially ruining the atmosphere.

In any case, Silent Hill 2 seems to be a critical success. Reviews have praised the remake’s graphics and atmosphere, as well as the enhanced combat and its clever puzzles. The game currently stands at an average of 88 on OpenCritic, with several reviewers giving it 9/10 or higher scores. While there are not many mods available for Silent Hill 2’s remake at the moment, the game’s popularity may help this to change, and it’s possible that gamers will see some actually useful mods in the future.
