Summary
- Enhanced graphics aside, Silent Hill 2 Remake introduces new enemies and refined combat, making boss battles more horrifying.
- Pyramid Head boss encounter cannot be won, emphasizing survival over damage.
- The final boss resembles an eerie, metallic spider frame, while Abstract Daddy in Toluca Prison offers a challenging, multi-phase battle.
Silent Hill 2 has a lot of changes with the remake besides the graphics. For example, there are new enemies, glass can be broken, and combat is genuinely more refined. That last change is good because the boss battles were significantly upgraded to create a more horrific show.
6 Beginner Tips For Silent Hill 2 Remake
Here's what new players will need to know before entering the misty town of Silent Hill as James Sunderland in Silent Hill 2 Remake.
It’ll be a miracle if the hearts of players don’t leap out of their throats or their controllers don’t fall to the ground due to sweat. Silent Hill 2 has arrived at just the right time in October to create frights beyond amazement and the bosses are definitely part of that formula. Let’s go through them all, disregarding mini-boss or mob encounters, in this spoiler-filled breakdown.
WARNING! Spoilers ahead!
6 Pyramid Head
Not So Hard If You Wait It Out
- Location: Blue Creek Apartments
The first encounter with Pyramid Head is not that hard if players know what they are in for. Without a doubt, this man or creature is one of the most terrifying in the game. His giant head and equally giant sword rivals that of Cloud Strife from Final Fantasy 7 which will assuredly make players quake in their boots.
Here’s the thing though: this fight cannot be won. That’s to say players do not need to damage Pyramid Head to complete the fight. All they have to do is avoid his attacks and he will be more aggressive as time goes on. Damaging him will lessen how long players will need to run around for, but this is a horror game so conserving ammo when possible is a must. If players are shaft enough and keen enough to dodge when they can, this boss should be over in no time.
5 Double Pyramid Heads
Teaming Up For A Sacrifice
- Location: Lakeview Hotel
If one fight wasn’t scary enough, the second to last fight was against two Pyramid Heads. The arena is a lot smaller than the first encounter too and these two chuckleheads are armed with spears which indeed can be thrown. Players have one advantage: their slow speed.
So, it’s a good idea to run to one end of the arena, blast a few rounds into the closest unit with the Hunting Rifle or Handgun, and then run to the other end of the room once they get close. When moving, be sure to spam the dodge button. For the scariest monster in the Silent Hill series and in this game, it’s a shame both boss encounters aren’t more involved.
4 Mary/Maria
Love Rendered Into Pure Hatred
- Location: Lakeview Hotel
Depending on the ending players get in Silent Hill 2, the final boss will either be Mary or Maria disguising herself as Mary. Either way, they both look and operate the same. The character will transform into a monster, using a bed to create a metallic spider frame similar to Fresh Lip.
Keeping distance is important because it has a good reach when players are close. Also, it can charge at players and there are multiple phases. While it is a nice twist to make Mary/Maria the final villain, it is disappointing that the boss fight borrows heavily from Fresh Lip.
3 Abstract Daddy
Daddy Smash!
- Location: Toluca Prison
Silent Hill 2’s Abstract Daddy sounds like a new search term but it is far from anything fun. This boss was created from the mind of Angela, a woman haunted by the abuse of her father. This fear has manifested itself into a horrific creature wherein two bodies have morphed into a door and they have Hulk-like strength.
They can break through walls like they were nothing. This monster has a lot of health too so there will be a lot of phases players will have to go through as they traverse a maze of destruction. One could say perhaps there are too many phases and this boss absorbs bullets, in their limited capacity, like candy. This can be a bit unfair but it is a good upgrade from the original version of Silent Hill 2.
2 Flesh Lip
A Caged Surprise From Above
- Location: Brookhaven Hospital
The aforementioned Flesh Lip is the second boss players will face in Silent Hill 2, located at the end of the Brookhaven Hospital section. This humanoid figure will be locked in a cage, seemingly harmless, until it descends from the ceiling. Players must watch where the sparks are flying to tell where the Flesh Lip will drop next.
Silent Hill 2 Remake: Every Ending, Ranked
Bloober Team's Silent Hill 2 remake features 8 endings, each with a distinct canon as to how the story ends.
Once it takes enough damage, the cage will split and Flesh Lip will grow metallic spider-like appendages. It becomes faster in this stage too and thanks to the limited area, it will be hard to dodge. The best weapon will be the Shotgun to hit every part of the body as much as possible. It’s a tough fight against a horrifying monster with lips where they shouldn’t be.
1 Eddie Dombrowski
The Folly Of Man
- Location: Labyrinth
Eddie begins in a rut when James finds him puking into a toilet early on in the adventure. Every encounter after is more unhinged and players can piece together that he is running from something. Like Angela, Eddie has a fear of his father. Unlike Angela though, Eddie killed his father and is unafraid to kill again.
Eddie’s boss fight in Silent Hill 2 t akes place in a meat cooler and players have to find Eddie while dodging his revolver shots in a maze of meat. The obstructions and low lighting will make this fight as thrilling as something from Metal Gear Solid, another great Konami franchise. It’s interesting that the best, and perhaps hardest boss fight in Silent Hill 2, is not against a monster but a fellow man.
