Portrait in Red is the fourth quest in Brushes with Death DLC, which starts after the player retrieves the Basilisk egg for Voyta. Unlike the previous quests, this quest has an important decision that players must make—whether to kill Burkhard or spare his life. The choice impacts not only the outcome of the quest but also whether you unlock a missable trophy/achievement. This guide offers a full walkthrough of the quest and breaks down both outcomes so you can decide what path to take in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2.

How To Start Portrait in Red Quest In Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2
After retrieving the egg of a Basilisk in the Chiaroscuro quest, you must wait until the next morning, after which you can talk to Voyta inside Trosky Castle. This time, he will tell you that his final task in Trosky is at hand, and for that, he must fight and kill Burkhard. You will get an easy Skill Check, and if successful, you will learn more about why he wants to kill him. After the conversation ends and you take it upon yourself to deal with Burkhard, you must travel northeast of the Castle towards northern Apollonia.
Should You Kill or Spare Burkhard In Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2?
Once you reach the marked area, make your way directly below the "A" marker on your map. Here, you will find the camp where Burkhard resides, along with the other gang members. There are multiple ways to deal with him:
- Firstly, you can wait until nightfall and sneak into the camp when most of the enemies are sleeping. Head over to Burkhard and stealth kill him using a dagger.
- Your second option is to fight Burkhard and kill him properly. You can opt for a duel instead of fighting all the gang members at once by talking to Burkhard and passing the Skill Check.
These methods will allow you to progress through the quest, but will void the "Vengeance Solves Nothing" trophy/achievement. For the trophy, you have to let him live, so you will need to try a different method. Wait until night and enter the camp while making sure no one sees you. Not everyone will be sleeping, as some are keeping watch. Sneak your way to the chest and lock-pick it to find the "Killer's Helmet" inside that you need to grab and leave.
Head back to Voyta and talk to him about the Helmet that you have brought back. He will ask you if you killed Burkhard, to which you can pass a Speech Check and lie about it. This will complete the quest, and you will get the trophy for sparing Burkhard, the Murderer's painted Helmet, and a few extra symbols that you can paint on your shield.
The Speech Check does require high Speech, so make a save before talking to Voyta, and if the check fails, increase your Speech and come back.
