The player will run into quite a few optional bosses in their playthrough of Shin Megami Tensei 5: Vengeance, one of which is Kumbhanda, a boss that was also present in Shin Megami Tensei 5.
8 Hardest Bosses In Shin Megami Tensei Games, Ranked
Players are in for a tough time when up against the following bosses from the Shin Megami Tensei games.
This optional boss can be challenging if the player is under-leveled or not well prepared, and to acquire his bottle for Succubus, the player will have to take him down.
How To Unlock the Kumbhanda's Bottle Quest
On their way through the Konan 2nd block, the player might run across a Succubus demon. Specifically, she will be right next to the Leyline Fount of the Konan 2nd Block, making her hard to miss. She will ask the player if they have met a demon known as Kumbhanda on the way there. The player likely has.
She tells the player that she and Kumbhanda were very close but he has changed. She asks the player to put him out of his misery. This will unlock the Kumbhanda’s bottle quest.
The player can fight and defeat Kumbhanda without taking on the Succubus’s quest.

Before the Battle
Best Demons To Take Along
Choosing the right demons for this fight can make it all a whole lot easier. As seen, Kumbhanda has one weakness, and that is electric attacks. Here are some good options to take along that should be available to the player at this point in the game.
- Lilim. Lilim is a demon the player can unlock by siding with her instead of Principality a bit earlier in this area of the game. If the player chooses her, this fight could be made a whole lot easier. This demon already comes to the player at level 32, which is ideal for fighting Kumbhanda. She specializes in electric attacks, which will land heavy damage on Kumbhanda. She also does not have a weakness for force, making her ideal.
- Yakshini. Yakshini is a demon that is great when it comes to physical attacks. She has Pierce Armor which allows her to lower an enemy’s defense. Her affinities are such that she can block force attacks, making her ideal for this fight.
- Jatayu. This king of birds could not be better suited to block Kumbhanda’s attacks. Indeed, this demon doesn't just absorb damage from force attacks, but Kumbhanda’s force attacks will also heal him. The player can make him inherit an electric attack and make use of it during the fight if necessary as well.
- Dis. This demon can be quite useful as a support during most fights, this one included. If the player is able to level her up, she can unlock a great skill for this fight, Force Block +2. This will block any of Kumbhanda’s force-based attacks. She herself also has a resistance to force attacks, to start with.
Shin Megami Tensei 5: Vengeance - A Goddess Stolen Guide
A Goddess Stolen will have players face Loki and determine if they should eat a Golden Apple in Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance.
One of the guest characters Yoko Hiromine can also be of great use during this fight. She does not have a weakness to force and she has access to a great electric skill, Ziodyne.
Best Affinities for the Nahobino
For this fight, the player wants to make sure the Nahobino, or their main character, does not have a weakness towards force, as that is something Kumbhanda makes great use of.
The player can change the Nahobino’s affinities through demon essences by unlocking the Divine Amalgamation miracle and going to the world of shadows.
By default, the Nahobino has a force weakness, so it’s essential that this is changed, or it will become a hindrance during the fight.
Here are some good essences for the Nahobino to make use of to change his affinities:
- Yakshini’s Essence. Gives block to force and a weakness to electric.
- Sudama’s Essence. Gives block to force and a weakness to fire and Ice.
- Narcissus’s Essence. Gives block to force and weakness to fire.
- Muu Shuwuu’s Essence. Gives block to force and weakness to fire.
Items to Keep on Hand
When going into a fight, it’s always great for the player to keep items on hand that can make this fight go by easier. Here are a few that could come of use in the battle.
- Force Dampener. This item puts up a barrier over the player and their allies for one turn that blocks all force attacks for the duration. Seeing as Kumbhanda makes use of force attacks, this can be made of use if the Nahobino or other characters do not block force.
- Amirata Soda. Kumbhanda can possibly inflict seal on the player and their allies by using Dark Sword +3, so having on hand an Amirata Soda can be of use to cure this status ailment.
Defeating Kumbhanda
The game recommends the player to be at least at level 32 before undertaking this fight.
The premise of this fight is easy. The player will have to block Kumbhanda’s force attacks and unleash on him electric attacks.
As with any boss fight, the player should go in with a full Magatsuhi bar so that they can land critical hits on the enemy from the get-go.
On Kumbhanda’s turn, he will likely unleash a force attack on the player and their allies. If the player has at least one ally that can block force, he will lose the rest of his actions and the player will be able to land more attacks.
If the player wasn’t able to procure any demons with force resistance, a good option would be to put up a force dampener.
The player should keep in mind that Kumbhanda has an annoying attack known as Spirit Drain that can suck up a character’s MP. So, it’s useful to have items that restore MP when needed.
With that, the player should be able to take down this optional boss without too much hassle.
Rewards for Defeating Kumbhanda and Completing the Kumbhanda’s Bottle Quest
“Kumbhanda was defeated. You were asked to give the Kumbhanda's Bottle to Succubus.
Report back to Succubus and deliver the Kumbhanda's Bottle.”
Of course, once defeating Kumbhanda, the player will receive some experiments points. He will also drop Kumbhanda’s bottle.
Upon giving this bottle to Succubus, the player will be rewarded with 8000 experience points, as well as the Night Talisman. This talisman allows demons from the night race to use Soul Drain, a Magatsuhi skill.
