Shang-Chi Star Calls for One Actor’s Return in the Sequel

Simu Liu, star of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, shared his experience on set and expressed his hope for the return of one of the actresses in Shang-Chi 2.

With the Shang-Chi sequel confirmed in Marvel's future plans, the lead actor hopes a key actress will return. He believes the movie would not be the same without her. But will she be part of the next installment?

In an interview with Collider at Fan Expo Canada, Simu Liu shared his hopes for Michelle Yeoh to return in Shang-Chi 2. He highlighted her positive influence during the filming of Legend of the Ten Rings, especially in their fight scenes. Liu expressed how honored he was to work alongside the Oscar-winning actress, emphasizing how much fun they had and all he learned from her.

In the first Shang-Chi movie from 2021, Michelle Yeoh took on the role of Ying Nan, a guardian of Ta Lo and Shang-Chi's aunt, who played a crucial role in his combat training. Yeoh and Simu Liu shared an intense fight scene, but Liu noted that he learned much more from their time together off-screen. He fondly described Yeoh as "the absolute best kind of person to hang out with," emphasizing how her influence went beyond the script. Given Yeoh's reputation as a certified martial artist and her celebrated stunt work in movies like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Supercop, Liu admitted feeling nervous about fighting alongside her. He joked about feeling like "a big clumsy chunk of meat just flopping around" compared to Yeoh's petite and graceful movements, but despite his anxiety, he took on the challenge. Yeoh helped him find harmony with his body, and through rigorous practice, their scenes came together beautifully in the end. Liu is hopeful that Yeoh will return for Shang-Chi 2, especially given the impact she had on him during the first movie. However, her involvement remains uncertain due to her packed schedule. After winning the Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in Everything Everywhere All at Once, Yeoh has been focusing on major projects like her upcoming movie Star Trek: Section 31 and joining Blade Runner 2099. As a result, Shang-Chi 2 may not be her top priority right now, but that could change in the future.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings became a critical and commercial hit upon its release, boasting a budget of up to $200 million and raking in $432 million at the box office. The movie also garnered a 91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and received an Oscar nomination. Despite its success, talks of a sequel have lingered for years without much progress. Recently, Simu Liu confirmed that a sequel is in the works, but no official announcement has been made by Marvel. Even Liu's co-star, Awkwafina, revealed she has not received any updates on production. While Liu could not share additional details, he did mention that Marvel is currently working on the story for the movie. Fans have speculated that Shang-Chi 2 could potentially slot in between the two upcoming Avengers movies, but this timeline is still uncertain.
