The era of mini retro consoles proceeds as some gaming companies seek to introduce their old lineup of titles to modern gamers and renew passionate fans of the originals alike, including the Sega Genesis classic console. Sega has announced a second mini Sega Genesis which comes with its own lineup of games separate from the initial release. The Sega Genesis Mini 2 joins the ranks of several existing mini consoles like the Nintendo Classic consoles which are expected to continue, PlayStation Classic, and 2019's initial Genesis Mini. While the original Genesis Mini came packaged with classics like Golden Axe, Kid Chameleon, and Sonic the Hedgehog, the Sega Genesis Mini 2 will offer new Genesis titles, and it will also include Sega CD games, furthering the potential of the upcoming mini console. On top of 50 new Genesis and Sega CD games with the Genesis Mini 2, Sega has confirmed that this mini console "boasts even more power" which harkens back to the days in which Sega proclaimed that its consoles did what "Nintendon't." Some titles that have already been announced for the classic Sega console are After Burner 2, Sonic CD, Splatterhouse 2, Vectorman 2, and more. Sega has also stated that the Genesis Mini 2 will offer a never-released bonus game that may not be unveiled until the launch of the Sega Genesis Mini 2 on October 27.
Long-time Sega fans that lamented the Sega Genesis Mini having the original model's design and 3-button gamepad can rejoice in the sequel's copying of the second model and usage of the popular 6-button controller. Gamers that are anticipating the release of the Genesis Mini 2 can already pre-order the mini console to ensure that they receive one for $103.80 on Amazon, while shipping will add more to the bill. The Sega Genesis Mini 2 will come boxed with one wired controller, a USB power adapter, a power cord, and an HDMI cable, while separate 6-button controllers may be purchased like with previous consoles as well.
Many Sega fans that hoped for a Western release for the Mega Drive Mini 2 took to the announcement of the Sega Genesis Mini 2 with notable enthusiasm, many specifying that they've hoped for a version of the classic console with the 6-button gamepad. Because of the unexpected nature of a sequel to a mini platform, some gobsmacked gamers asked if the announcement was even real, and others asked for Saturn and Master System minis. Among the games requested by long-time Sega fans in response to the Sega Genesis Mini 2 reveal include Night Trap, Popful Mall, Truxton, and Terminator CD.
