After keeping fans waiting, Marvel Studios' Secret Invasion dropped its latest trailer. The preview confirms Samuel L. Jackson's iconic Nick Fury has been through a lot, including a makeover that sees the former S.H.I.E.L.D. Director drop his signature eyepatch.
Although it took MCU until Captain Marvel to reveal how Fury got his eye mangled, Jackson became synonymous with the black patch since making his first appearance in Iron Man. However, despite his status as a Marvel staple, Fury has been missing for quite a while since that Spider-Man: Far From Home post-credits scene, and it looks like the events that have transpired have a lot to do with his change in style.
In an interview with Vanity Fair, Jackson commented on Secret Invasion's Nick Fury being different from his past persona. “He just doesn’t wear the patch. The patch is part of who the strong Nick Fury was,” Jackson explained, saying he no longer feels that way about himself. It’s not as if the lack of a patch is the only difference nowadays, as Jackson also added Secret Invasion won’t have any superheroes “ready for action in a spandex one-piece.” Even Fury is ditching his more comic book-like leather attire for some comfy jeans and a t-shirt.
Moving on to more important aspects of the show, Jackson summed up why the Skrulls crisis hits a breaking point in Secret Invasion. It seems Fury hasn’t delivered his promise of finding Talos' people a new home where they don't have to live undercover. Overall, “The death of Iron Man, the death of Black Widow” has taken a toll on Fury, who only appears to have returned to fix the mess he might have caused.
Suffice it to say, the MCU's take on Secret Invasion is a huge departure from the comic book source material, but some fans are waiting to see if the show somehow ties into the Avengers: Secret Wars plot down the line. With the new trailer, Marvel Studios also shared the show’s official synopsis, which mentions that Secret Invasion takes place “in the present day MCU," roughly around the same time as Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, or the year 2025 in Earth-616.
Perhaps the most intriguing part about Secret Invasion is that viewers will finally find out which MCU characters were Skrulls all along, as that’s how the alien race positions itself to cause trouble among humans. There's not much waiting to see if this is Nick Fury's final mission.
Secret Invasion is scheduled for release on June 21, 2023.
