In a rather random move, 2006 action-adventure title Scurge: Hive is being brought forward to modern platforms. The game was initially launched almost two decades ago on the Nintendo DS and Game Boy Advance, and will soon be accessible everywhere.
First released in October 2006, Scurge: Hive was developed by Orbital Media and published by SouthPeak Interactive. Despite a modest reception at launch and a lack of sequels or ports, the Nintendo DS classic quietly gained a dedicated following over time. For nearly 20 years, Scurge: Hive has remained dormant, never straying beyond its original Nintendo confines - but that changes now.
Nintendo Switch App Update Adds Highly Requested Feature
Ahead of the launch of the Switch 2 on June 5, the Nintendo Switch App is getting a major update, adding some intuitive features.
The official Twitter account of Ratalaika Games - the studio behind 2024's Aero the Acro-Bat re-release - recently confirmed that Scurge: Hive is being reintroduced to a new generation of players on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and PC sometime this year. Players will once again step into the role of Jenosa Arma, a bounty hunter tasked with investigating a remote science facility plagued by a mysterious parasitic virus known as the Scurge. Armed with a protective suit that slows - but doesn't cure - the infection, Jenosa must balance combat, platforming, and puzzle-solving while managing a constantly rising infection meter.
Scurge: Hive is Coming to Modern Platforms With New Features
Scurge: Hive's re-release will include a suite of quality-of-life features that aim to modernize the experience for a new audience, such as save states, cheats, and a rewind function. Additional content includes a Boss Rush mode, six distinct levels featuring large-scale battles, and an upgraded arsenal system. Despite initial critiques surrounding its dated isometric perspective and awkward controls, Scurge: Hive has been remembered fondly by a segment of players who appreciated its ambitious mechanics and atmospheric world-building. These elements are set to return in full force, offering both nostalgia and new challenges.
While unexpected, the re-release of Scurge: Hive is no doubt a very positive development for fans who have wanted to see the game on modern platforms for quite a while. Ratalaika Games has yet to announce a concrete release date for Scurge: Hive, but has promised a 2025 launch window for the port. Interestingly, despite the game being a former Nintendo exclusive and even making its way to the Switch, Scurge: Hive hasn't been confirmed for a Switch 2 launch yet. It might just be a matter of Ratalaika Games not having access to a Switch 2 devkit at the moment, so in due time, Scurge: Hive will likely end up on the brand-new Nintendo handheld as well.
