  • The show was a sitcom staple in the 2000s and found continued popularity through syndication.
  • Creator Bill Lawrence and main stars Zach Braff, Donald Faison, and Sarah Chalke are returning.

After years and years of rampant speculation, a 2000s sitcom staple is officially returning to ABC this fall. Fans will not only be excited that it's coming back, but that all three of the show's original stars are returning as well.

The 2000s were an extremely different landscape for sitcoms than the current entertainment climate. Every network had at least one hit comedy that was appointment viewing each week. ABC had Modern Family, NBC had The Office, CBS had Two and a Half Men and The Big Bang Theory, and even Fox had shows like The Bernie Mac Show and Arrested Development. Before Netflix came along and totally changed entertainment with mass-scale streaming, people would tune in each week to their favorite sitcoms to watch their beloved characters struggle through comedic trials and tribulations. Current network sitcoms like Abbott Elementary and Ghosts are still thriving in the new media landscape, but their viewership numbers are a pittance compared to the shows of yesteryear. Now, ABC is bringing back one of those old sitcoms in a gamble to recreate some of that long-gone magic.

News just broke that ABC has issued a Scrubs reboot a straight-to-series order, meaning a brand-new season of the classic sitcom is set to air this fall. Longtime fans will be delighted to know that Zach Braff, Donald Faison, and Sarah Chalke are all set to return as John "J.D." Dorian, Christopher Turk, and Elliot Reid, respectively. Bill Lawrence, creator of the original series and the man behind current hits like Ted Lasso and Shrinking, is set to be an executive producer on the series. Tim Hobert and Assem Batra, two veterans of the Scrubs writing room, are on board as showrunners.

After Years Of Speculation, Scrubs Is Officially Returning To ABC

Here's Hoping The Janitor Continues Torturing J.D.

A Scrubs reboot has been rumored about and speculated on for years now, as the show found continued popularity through syndication on networks like Comedy Central and various streaming services. For their part, Braff and Faison began a Scrubs-themed podcast titled Fake Doctors, Real Friends at the height of the COVID pandemic and have been seen together in numerous T-Mobile commercials over the past few years. Lawrence has been teasing a Scrubs reboot for a long time now, even claiming it was "very close" last year.

Scrubs means so very much to me. So excited for the chance to get the band back together.” - Bill Lawrence

It is unclear if other Scrubs cast members will be joining the reboot or not, but Deadline also reports that series regular Judy Reyes has had positive talks about returning in some capacity, even though she's currently starring on ABC's High Potential. It's hard to imagine any incarnation of Scrubs without John C. McGinley as Dr. Perry Cox or Neil Flynn as the Janitor, but crazier things have happened in the realm of television. It also seems unlikely that later season additions Eliza Coupe, Kerry Bishé, Michael Mosley, and Dave Franco would join the show in any permanent capacity, but appearances from any former cast member are sure to delight fans.

Fans who are excited about Scrubs returning to ABC should head to Hulu since the entire series is currently streaming on the service. Maybe J.D. Will finally get to finish shooting his vampire screenplay, Dr. Acula?
