After months of wondering when more news would come out about the upcoming horror sequel, fans will be glad to know that there is a release date for Scream 7.
On October 1st, 2024, Variety reported that Scream 7 will be released on February 27th, 2026. Director Kevin Williamson and Neve Campbell, who is playing final girl Sidney Prescott, posted the release date on their Instagram accounts. Since that date is still over a year away, fans might wonder why it can't be released sooner. However, no actor other than Campbell has been cast in the movie, as Courteney Cox recently shared that she has yet to sign a contract. Scream 7 also hasn't started filming yet and, according to the latest reports, Scream 7 will film in December 2024.
There was a much quicker turnaround time for the fifth and sixth movies in the Scream franchise. Scream (2022) was released on January 14th, 2022, followed by Scream 6 on March 10th, 2023. However, there have been a lot of changes behind the scenes, which accounts for the delays here. Melissa Barrera, who played Sam Carpenter, was fired from the project, and Jenna Ortega, who played Sam's younger sister Tara, exited the movie because of scheduling conflicts. Fans are curious how Scream 7 will deal with these exits. Kevin Williamson also became the new director a few months ago after talented horror director Christopher Landon left.
Since there are still two months to go before Scream 7 begins filming, fans are curious about who else will be cast in the film. It seems likely that Cox will sign on, although no one knows for sure, and there is no indication of when she could finalize her contract. Since Campbell is back and Sidney is married to Mark Kincaid, audiences think Patrick Dempsey could come back and play the detective again. Although it's hard to think that Sidney would be the only original or legacy character in Scream 7, it's possible that no other actors will come back, and Sidney will be surrounded by newer characters.
While fans don't want the next installment in the slashed franchise to feel rushed, many would likely agree that despite the quick time frame between Scream (2022) and Scream 6, the sixth movie was still well-done, surprising, and fun. Scream 6 has a creative and original opening scene, compelling new characters, and a strong, unforgettable scene featuring Gale Weathers. While there have been a lot of changes since Scream 7 was first announced, hopefully all this extra time will result in a fantastic movie.
