Animals are mostly a highlight when included in a game, as who doesn't want to pet an adorable dog or cat when they pass them on the virtual streets? Players might even have their very own animal companion to accompany them on their journey, joining in on their fights.
Best Animal Companions In Video Games
Video games with an animal companion can provide gamers with the phenomenal experience of having a loyal friend by your side.
But animals aren't always such a welcome addition, as there are those that are genuinely frightening to encounter, incredibly vicious in nature, or even monstrous and deformed. Rather than being content to receive pats and befriend the player, these scary video game animals would instead see the player as their next tasty meal.
5 Endogeny (Undertale)
Multiple Dog Monsters Formed into One Amalgamate
Undertale
Undertale is one of the most charming and cutesy RPGs on the market, following a young human child who falls down into a world of monsters in the underground. As they encounter the monsters that reside there, some kind and others less kind, they can choose to fight or spare everyone they encounter, which will directly influence the ending the player will receive.
There are many dogs to encounter throughout the journey that continue the cute and charming themes, such as the dog guards that are in love and the annoying dog that just looks like an ordinary pomeranian but loves to get into all sorts of mischief. That said, there is also a secret laboratory that players can explore once they have completed the neutral run, and it's home to all sorts of amalgamates, such as the Endogeny. Rather than being one dog, it is essentially many fused into one creature, unnerving in both its backstory and appearance. Even if it isn't outright hostile, it would still definitely frighten any who would behold its monstrous form.
4 Legendary Bear (Red Dead Redemption 2)
Hunting This Bear Will Be No Small Feat
Red Dead Redemption 2
Outlaws are slowly becoming a thing of the past, but the Van der Linde gang is still going strong as one of the last gangs trying to find a home, often falling onto the wrong side of the law to make sure that they can provide for everyone. In this game, players control Arthur Morgan, a veteran member of the gang, and the one who will be doing most of the work to ensure there are enough provisions for all.
The Most Difficult Red Dead Redemption 2 Legendary Animals To Hunt
With 16 Legendary Animals to find and hunt in Red Dead Redemption 2, some hunters might find themselves being hunted by these ferocious beasts.
One way to ensure this is by hunting to gather meat and skins from the flourishing wildlife across the land. Of course, the best ones to hunt are the legendary animals, with one of the most intimidating being the bear. This apex predator is all fur, claws, teeth and sheer force, fully capable of completely overpowering and scaring the living daylights out of the player. Gamers will need to arm themselves with plenty of ammo and courage to take on this beast.
3 Maneater Boar (Bloodborne)
Players Risk Becoming This Piggy's Meal
Bloodborne
- Released
- March 24, 2015
- Developer(s)
- From Software
- Platform(s)
- PlayStation 4
In the world of Bloodborne, a plague has beset the Yharnam, turning ordinary men into beasts. And what a menagerie of beasts there that will challenge the player with every step they take through the gothic and brooding land, traversing from place to place as they find new and bigger threats to contend with. And one of these threats is the large and imposing maneater boar.
Boars are often meat consumed by humans, but this boar is vicious, large, infested with all sorts of disease, and has a taste for human flesh, especially the players. With its fast movements and deadly size, the boar isn't as unexciting as one might expect from mere reputation alone. Facing this animal can be a frightening experience, especially for those unprepared for it to move at its startling speed, which seems unlikely from its bloated size.

Silent Hill: Homecoming was a divisive entry among fans. It was handled by a different developer than Team Silent, who were lauded for the work they did on earlier titles in the franchise. It features a new protagonist by the name of Alex Shepherd, whose search for his younger brother takes him to the titular town. Certain enemies return from previous installments, the most infamous of all being Pyramid Head, which received mixed criticism from fans for his existence being tied to James Sunderland, the protagonist of Silent Hill 2.
Best Silent Hill Monsters Ever, Ranked
The monsters in Silent Hill are terrifying, grotesque, and above all, intelligently designed in terms of what they symbolize.
There were also new enemies, one of them being dubbed as Ferals. These creatures resemble dogs that have had all their fur and skin removed, revealing the red and bloody tissue beneath. They seem to have no visible eyes or ears, and yet, they still present a significant threat to the player thanks to their strength and speed. Their prowess combined with their startling appearance make the Ferals one of the most feared animalistic creatures in gaming.

Resident Evil is one of the best survival horror series of all time, having weathered the ages through thick and thin. It established its identity through more action focused titles, but it returned to its survival horror roots with the release of games such as Resident Evil: Revelations and Resident Evil 7. The game that started it all remains fondly in the memories of its fans, as it introduced the world of zombies, monsters, and two of its most famous poster children, Chris and Jill.
This game does not skimp out on its scares, and every fan could recount their favorite, and most would say the infamous scene of the dog jumping through the window right in front of the player. This completely unexpected moment delivered one heck of a scare, and even when the jump scare ended, players were not spared the terror, being faced with a gruesome zombie dog. It has since remained one of the most infamous Resident Evil monsters and has appeared in subsequent titles.
