While you can build on or around most obstacles in Satisfactory by using foundations and ramps, there are some paths and secrets you can only open by exploding the rocks blocking your way. That's when explosive charges (called Nobelisk in honor of Alfred Nobel) come in handy.
Nobelisk charges are also handy when you need to destroy toxic towers, and they're incredibly useful against certain types of enemies. However, Satisfactory isn't completely clear when it comes to how you can unlock this useful tool, and it comes in several varieties that each has its own unique properties. Read on to learn where to start.

How to Unlock and Craft Every Nobelisk Charge
The first type of explosive you need to unlock in Satisfactory is the basic Nobelisk charge. You'll find this on the left side of the Sulfur research tree in the MAM. The research icon is a detonator, but this project also unlocks the basic (red) Nobelisk charge. You'll need a steady supply of both sulfur and coal if you want to complete (and use) this research, because the required items are:
- 50 Black Powder
- 100 Steel Pipes
- 200 Cables
You can also find research projects that unlock other Nobelisk explosive types. Each one has its own effects, but you can't complete any of them until you create the Nobelisk detonator project.

13 Beginner Tips For Playing Satisfactory
From the importance of careful conveyor belt placement to the benefits of verticality, here are some useful tips for Satisfactory players.
How and When to Use Nobelisk Charges
To use Nobelisk charges, you first need to equip the Nobelisk detonator in one of your hand slots. When the detonator is your active item, you can press the reload button (default R) to pull out a new Nobelisk charge, or you can hold the reload button down to switch between the Nobelisk ammo types in your inventory.
With a charge ready to go, you can press the interaction button (default left mouse button) to throw the charge, or click and hold to throw the charge further. No matter which charge type you use, the Nobelisk will stick to whatever surface or creature it hits. You can then equip and throw more charges by pressing the interaction button again.
To detonate a charge, you need to press the right mouse button. One press will cause all the charges you throw to explode all at once, so make sure you're far from all of them before you hit the button. Charges may also explode when hit by a Spitter's ranged attack, or by a pioneer's weapon damage.
Black powder is a cheap resource once you find a reliable source of coal and sulfur, and you can combine coal and iron ore to craft the steel pipes you need to build a supply of Nobelisk charges. You can stack up to 50 Nobelisk charges in a single inventory space, which makes it a viable weapon to use against aggressive animals. However, the slow throwing windup makes Nobelisk more useful against slower enemies like Spitters and Hatchers. For Hogs and Stingers, you're better off using other weapons.
Other uses for Nobelisk charges include:
- Destroying boulders and walls. However, Nobelisk only works on boulders with large, dark cracks.
- Destroying foliage. However, doing so means you don't get any of the leaves, wood, or mycelia you'd get from harvesting foliage by hand or with the chainsaw.
- Killing spore flowers. These creatures resist normal damage types, but you can destroy them using explosives.
- Exploding poison pillars. Pillars destroyed with Nobelisk charges won't come back, which lets you explore new areas without worrying about gas mask filters.
- Rapid movement. You can throw a pulse Nobelisk onto the underside of a one-meter foundation, stand on the foundation, and then explode it to use the shockwave to propel yourself into the air. The foundation blocks the damage without blocking the movement, giving you a way to safely fly into the sky. Just make sure you have a jetpack or parachute equipped so you can safely land.
- Nobelisk can't deal damage to most constructed objects, including foundations, machinery, and vehicles.
