Leveling up is one of the primary ways by which players can improve their characters in Salt and Sacrifice. However, the game does not provide much in the way of tutorializing about how to access this important mechanic. This lack of information may leave some players confused about exactly how to level up in Salt and Sacrifice, and this guide is here to shine some light on the matter.
Salt and Sacrifice: How to Level Up
The first step toward leveling up in Salt and Sacrifice is to obtain Salt, which essentially functions as experience points in this Souls-like game. Salt is earned by defeating enemies, with Mages granting a significant amount of the resource, and players can see their current Salt count in the bottom-left corner of the screen. Notably, the bar below the Salt count indicates how close a character is to leveling up, and fans can perform the action when it is completely filled. It is also worth mentioning that Salt is dropped on the ground upon death, and it is lost completely if players die again before picking it up.
After obtaining enough Salt, players should make their way to back to Pardoner's Vale, Salt and Sacrifice's hub area. Indie video game fans can quickly transport to that location by selecting "return to camp" at any of the obelisks that they encounter while exploring, and they must locate the Trifaul Idol upon arrival. This large statue can be found to the left and up from Champion Hera, the NPC that players will be near when teleporting back to Pardoner's Vale, and these images depict the route:

With the Trifaul Idol located, players should simply stand in front of it and press the input that appears on-screen to pull up a menu with several options. One of those options is to "level up," and selecting it will take fans to a menu where they can exchange their Salt for levels. Making this exchange will increase the health of a character in Salt and Sacrifice, while also bestowing a Black Starstone (every level) and a Gray Starstone (every five levels) upon them.
To note, the Starstones that are earned through leveling up play a key role in another component of improving the Marked Inquisitor in Salt and Sacrifice. More specifically, Black Starstones are used to unlock and improve nodes on the game's skill tree, which is accessed by selecting "tree of skill" from the Trifaul Idol menu. Gray Starstones, on the other hand, can be used to unlearn nodes and reclaim Black Starstones, allowing players to respec their characters.
Salt and Sacrifice is available on PC, PS4, and PS5.
