Saints Row 4 took the wackiness of the franchise and dialed it up to 11, and the new Saints Row game seems determined to do the same thing all over again. At least as far as customization goes, Saints Row has clearly doubled down on how insane, but also in-depth its content can be. It recently showcased some of its customization options, with everything from a car’s tire profile to a person’s skin being deeply customizable.

When it comes to vehicles in Saints Row, there are plenty of options such as boats, hoverboards, VTALs, food trucks, and so on. Every detail is customizable, with abilities like ejector seats and kneecappers being possible too. In all of this, one base item stands out, and that’s the giant pirate ship players can drive through Santo Ileso.

A pirate ship on wheels is rare, but it has been done before. What makes this particular option hilariously fit the tone of the world is that it’s a clear SpongeBob SquarePants Easter egg. It is simply named the “Frying Dutchman.” As fans know, SpongeBob is a fry cook and his work centers around that, while the Flying Dutchman is a major character in the series. Connecting “frying” with the Flying Dutchman’s ship isn’t that much of a stretch, and it’s just hilarious that it doubles as a food truck.

It even fits in tonally in a world where rocket launchers can be put in guitar cases and assault rifles can be umbrellas. Indeed, every ounce of the game seems designed to intrigue players, bring them in, and then give them tools to make it as out-there as they want. Of course, there are plenty of “standard” options in Saints Row’ s customization should someone want a more straightforward criminal empire story, though it remains to be seen how much the game’s story supports this tonally.

Perhaps, if anything, the wacky customization in an otherwise straightforward criminal story makes it all the funnier. It all remains to be seen, of course, but fans can expect more Saints Row news this summer ahead of its August launch.
