SaGa Emerald Beyond is Square Enix's eleventh game in the SaGa franchise released for consoles and its fifteenth overall (counting mobile and browser games). The game follows several different protagonists on their own unique journeys, making it a decently sized game.

While playing the game, players will probably wonder what Roles are and how they fit into the game's combat. Each character can have a different Role, meaning there are many options. Here's a guide to them all.

SaGa Emerald Beyond Review

A semi-decent combat system can't make up for SaGa Emerald Beyond's inability to capture a player's attention or help make exploring its worlds fun.

What Are Roles?

Saga - Roles Explained

Roles define how the characters in SaGa Emerald Beyond fight. Players can change the characters' main Roles, so there can be characters that focus on attack, healing, defense, etc. The Kugutsu (the puppet-like race) have Souls rather than Roles (the same basic principle). Then, Ephemerals have their own types of Roles known as Ephemeral Roles. Finally, Vampires and Knights can equip the Sanguine Roles.
