Rusty Rabbit is a new 2.5D sidescrolling action platformer that will see players traverse Smokestack Mountain, a collection of stages each with their own unique twist on gameplay. As a grizzled rabbit piloting his mighty mech, players will encounter several dangerous and unique bosses designed to test them on the skills they've picked up along their journey. Rusty Rabbit players will have several upgradable tools and weapons at their disposal as they face all that Smokestack Mountain throws at them.

The Best War Games recently spoke with Rusty Rabbit creator and lead writer Gen Urobuchi about the game's development process and how its zany concept came to be. Urobuchi provided some insight into how the game's bosses incorporate elements of the stages they're related to and what players might be able to expect from the game's mechanics in their Smokestack journey.

Rusty Rabbit's Stages Use Gameplay Mechanics to Stand Apart from One Another

While there are sure to be more stages, developer Nitroplus has only unveiled two of Rusty Rabbit's stages on the game's website so far: a factory stage and a plant biome. 2D action platformer games typically have some way to make each area stand apart from one another aside from just their visual environments. Urobuchi elaborated on this, mentioning how each Rusty Rabbit stage brings its own new "gimmick" to the table with the hope of diversifying the gameplay as players progress through the levels.

"The original mock was quite simple in gameplay, so to increase its depth, Chime (developer) proposed a variety of stage gimmicks that add strategic elements to each level. The final game turned out to be far more dynamic and enjoyable than I had imagined, and I’m very pleased with the result."

In some of Rusty Rabbit's gameplay trailers, Stamp can be seen digging through and destroying blocks of dirt to progress through some of the levels. This is perhaps one of a few stage gimmicks players can expect, but regardless of the exact circumstance, each stage has something new for players.

Rusty Rabbit's Bosses Will Test Players' Newly Acquired Skills

It's hard to find a 2D action game that doesn't feature big boss battles (and for good reason), and Rusty Rabbit will be no exception. When asked about what will make each of Rusty Rabbit's bosses stand apart from one another, Urobuchi talked about how each one will incorporate the unique "gimmick" or gameplay element that is introduced in their respective stages.

"Our bosses have a strange charm—they’re scary, but also a bit lovable. Their attacks are tied closely to stage gimmicks, which I think will give players a fun strategic challenge. Personally, I’m a fan of the octopus."

It seems that players will have the opportunity to practice with the freshly introduced gameplay mechanics before ultimately having their new skills put to the test against the related stage boss. Urobuchi added that out of Rusty Rabbit's bosses, the octopus fight is his favorite. Seeing that all the characters in Rusty Rabbit seem to be animals, it's likely that all or most of the game's bosses will also be animals or mechanized versions too. It's clear that Urobuchi and the team at Nitroplus put a lot of thought and care into designing not just the world and story of Rusty Rabbit, but also how the game's stages will synergize with their respective boss fights.
